UPDATE: 12:00 PST: Not that it is really breaking news anymore, but it’s now up on the Obama web site
UPDATE #2: 9:45 PST: CNN is now officially reporting Biden has been offered the spot on the ticket. They cannot cite the official sources but the reporter indicates these are ‘very very solid sources’ that have confirmed Biden will be the nominee. So much for surprises (unless the morning brings a real shock). Associated Press, Fox News and ABC news are also confirming these reports.
Too bad that the Obama camp did so well in keeping things quiet and then let it break this badly (past midnight on the east coast is not what they wanted).
As a side-note, it is possible his son Beau will succeed him in the Senate, Beau is Attorney General of Delaware though he is scheduled to deploy to Iraq with the JAG corps soon.
UPDATE: 8:50 PST: CNN is reporting that Clinton has been told that she is not the pick and ABC news has reported that the Secret Service is being dispatched to Senator Biden’s home in Delaware. Reports also say the Senator has not been seen today (unlike the last few days where he was in and out of the house) and that his extended family is gathering.
Again, I would not be shocked if this is a head fake but it does seem to be panning out.
***************************************************************************
According to the Obama campaign they will not send text messages naming his VP pick until sometime tomorrow morning, reportedly around 10am eastern/7am pacific time. So it does look like they will hold off until tomorrow.
However both CNN and Fox (MSNBC is out for the Olympics) are reporting that both Tim Kaine and Evan Bayh have been told they are out of the running. CNN is saying they have officially confirmed both men are out while Fox and other networks are still holding back making a final statement.
Of course all of this could be a head fake by the Obama campaign to keep everyone guessing but it is looking more like the Biden rumors may be true. I personally did not think that they would go with Biden simply because of his penchant for gaffes and also because announcing someone new would be a nice surprise for the media.
