Not surprisingly, Arabs aren’t taking too kindly to Newt Gingrich’s recent comment that the Palestinians are an ‘invented people’ seeking little more than the destruction of Israel. For Algeria’s Le Quotidien d’Oran, K. Selim writes that if Gingrich makes his way into the White House, at least Arabs will be able to stop pretending that there is any hope of Washington being a fair arbiter.
For Le Quotidien d’Oran, K. Selim starts out this way:
Palestinians are “a group of terrorists” – an “invented people.” These are the words of Newt Gingrich, frontrunner to win the Republican presidential nomination, speaking on Friday. It was a message of rare racist clarity. The man who could become the next president of the United States is clearly in favor of a final solution through liquidation of the Palestinians.
This man, who accuses the excessively accommodating Mahmoud Abbas of being motivated by an “enormous desire” to destroy Israel, himself clearly displays a compulsive desire to destroy all Palestinians, whose existence he doesn’t recognize. Because, according to this great luminary, it is part of a massive Arab-Islamic plot that transformed this “group of terrorists” into a people.
Barack Obamaz, who for electoral reasons has groveled before the Israel lobby in Washington, will no doubt discover that this matter could seriously escalate – perhaps to the point where the lies essential to American diplomacy are laid bare. But at least Newt Gingrich’s comments have the merit of being clear and frank. They plainly correspond with the opinions of a significant section of the American establishment.
