The New York Times headlined it as follows:
Iran and the United States, along with five other world powers, announced on Thursday a surprisingly specific and comprehensive understanding on limiting Tehran’s nuclear program for the next 15 years, though they left several specific issues to a final agreement in June.
I was watching Secretary of State John Kerry on CNN briefing the world on the agreement with Iran and decided to switch to Fox News to see how this “Number One” cable news station was covering this historic event.
Nah, Fox News thought it more important to feature Bill O’Reilly’s bloviating. Incredulous, I continued watching Kerry’s statement on CNN, but switched back about ten minutes later to see if Fox News had come to their senses.
Nope. Instead, Fox News had their fair and balanced analysts already bashing the agreement — even while Kerry was still discussing the basics of the agreement.
No wonder, when I read a piece this afternoon by Andy Borowitz at the New Yorker, I shuddered.
In “Peace with Iran Could Limit Ability to Bomb It…” Borowitz reports how John McCain is warning that a lasting peace with Iran “could greatly limit our ability to bomb it.”
Borowitz quotes McCain telling reporters, “President Obama is hailing this framework as something that could enhance the prospects for peace in the Middle East…For those of us who have looked forward to bombing Iran for some time now, that would be a doomsday scenario.”
According to Borowitz, McCain lamented: “The Iranians know well and good that if they abandon their nuclear program exactly the way we’ve asked them to, we can kiss bombing them goodbye…It’s a damn shame.”
Finally, Borowitz says that McCain still hopes that the talks will break down giving the U.S. the opportunity to bomb, bomb, bomb* Iran.
“If we all wake up on July 1st and we’re at peace with Iran, don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Borowitz quotes the 100-year-war man.
“I shuddered” because I could not quite decide whether Borowitz’ excellent piece is life imitating satire, or satire imitating life.
Read Borowitz’ full satire piece here and decide for yourself.
* I have to be real fair and balanced: Borowitz wrote “bomb” only once in this particular “quote” of McCain.
