A leading Hamas official, Khaled Mashaal, has proposed a 10-year cease fire with Israel during which time a Palestinian state would be established based on the 1967 borders.
You get the feeling he thinks this is a big concession. It isn’t. Israel isn’t interested in cease-fires. It’s interested in peace. Permanent, lasting, peace, recognized as a full and equal member of the community of natons. If the Palestinian government is unwilling to offer peace and full recognition of Israel, then they continue to have nothing to talk about.
Of course, even this statement was in conflict with other Palestinian officials.
Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, however, declared on Monday that “Palestine” was Islamic land and that no one had the right to give it up, according to Israel Radio.
In a meeting with Iran’s spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Haniyeh said that an armed struggle was the only way to free Palestine from the “occupation.”
Haniyeh made his statements at the end of a four-day visit to Iran, after which he was scheduled to visit Sudan.
By the way, what’s the over/under on how likely it is that Haniyeh will say a word about the ongoing genocide of Black Muslims in Sudan while he’s there?
