Judging from the the last few articles we’ve translated from Iraq, the closer the United States gets to leaving, the more jittery become Iraqis. The mixed emotions are clear: a hatred for the invasion but a fear of the withdrawal.
In this article from Iraq’s Kitabat newspaper, columnist Ghaalib Zanjeel, while lamenting America’s conduct for the last seven years, rips the United States for leaving the country in a state of disorder worse than anything seen under Saddam Hussein.
In an article punctuated with more exclamation points than we’ve seen in years, for Kitabat, Ghaalib Zanjeel writes in part:
From the fall of the dictatorship to today, only those who came atop or crawling behind American tanks have remained stubbornly resistant to the truth. They keep preaching about American democracy and the prosperity that could be achieved by the sons of Uncle Sam. And despite seven barren years, during which Iraqis have suffered more than they did under Saddam, the missionaries who preach of American paradise still insist that the master of the world won’t leave until Iraq beams with security and peace and is transformed into another Japan. And if that doesn’t happen – it will at least be the Korea or Singapore of the Middle East!!
Whereas in the past we were first in education, health and public services, under American “guardianship” we are now first in corruption, illiteracy and insecurity – and beautiful Baghdad is now listed as one of the world’s dirtiest cities!!
Before they leave, unless they’ve already gone, they’ll go with Iraq’s people killing one another. … If need be, they’ll call on the United Nations to send international troops to force Arabs and Kurds to disengage – at the expense of Arabs, of course. It seems that Washington isn’t satisfied with one Israel – and one Netanyahu!
