The confession came a short time ago and was broadcast on the news networks.
But not exactly in the way you might have thought.
The occasion was a ceremony to sign a bill establishing a commission to honor the centennial of the birth of President Ronald Reagan. The guest of honor was Nancy Reagan who watched as Obama signed the bill and quipped ‘You’re a lefty too’ (in reference to fact that Reagan was left handed). Obama smiled and responded ‘yeah I’m a lefty but i think his (Reagan’s) signature was more readable.
I really thought Obama showed a lot of class in the event, especially considering that there has been some bad media the last few months over some unfortunate comments by Obama as well as the failure to invite Nancy to a ceremony on stem cell research. As he escorted her to the signing table, he made sure to point out a cable on the floor so she would step over it, always a kind move to an older person.
She also was quite polite and courteous to the President, demonstrating that people on different sides of the debate can reach across on certain issues.
Obviously Ronald Reagan is not the first person Obama would pick to honor nor is he the first President that Nancy would choose to be presiding over this event. But they both realized that, as Obama said, that our nation is made stronger by the differences we have.
I hope everyone on both sides of the political fence join in honoring the memory of one President and in praising the dignified actions of another.
