Are political web sites really all that popular?

Some of them clearly carry heavy traffic, at least in relative terms. For those of us who are addicted to politics and regularly haunt sites like TMV, we probably think this is a fairly important and mainstream topic. But it seems that there are other subjects which draw considerably more eyeballs on the old intertubes. I found an article referencing one such avocation which seems to dwarf political blogs in popularity. Before you click through the jump, can you guess what it is and put your suggestion in comments after? I’ll give you hint…

It involves needles.

  • Your hint made it too easy. I guessed before clicking the link.

In reality people just catch glimpses here and there of what's going on in politics. Their ears only perk up if they hear a catch-word that includes something near and dear to their very personal plight. Hand to mouth politics really..

That being said you can hardly spit in any direction and not hit someone who has lost a loved one, a job, a house, their life-savings prematurely to the vices and devices of MedMob. So this particular subject will perk up a lot of ears. People are talking about it everywhere I go. Everyone is scared shitless that their kids will get tonsillitis or appendicitis and they'll lose everything they've worked for and end up in a trailer park somewhere...or worse..

So yeah, certain subjects really draw in the common man but most of them they ignore.

Flip a coin. It's either celebrity gossip or porn. I would guess that a site like TMZ dwarfs TMV.

OK...so I was wrong. But a traffic comparison of a major site in the categories I guessed about would be informative.

I guessed tattoos. Lots of tattoos in SF and lots of tattoos on tourists in SF..... At least on the cute guys. :)

But I can see knitting.... I knit all the time. Mostly I knit my brows every time I wonder what the Republicans are up to and listen to the yarns they spin.

    That's political.
