Birthers Rejoice: Michele “Batty” Bachmann to the Rescue

As a freelance pundit and political addict, I must pause to bow my head and give thanks for one small thing. Even after Sarah Palin stepped down from the public stage, we’ll always have Minnesota, home of Jesse Ventura, Al Franken and… our favorite member of Congress for high comedy.

Today, Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) introduced a resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood. The resolution also proclaims the state as President Obama’s birthplace

Just as the presiding chair of the House, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), was about to declare the resolution passed by voice vote, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) stood and objected:

BACHMANN: Mr. Speaker? I object to the vote on the grounds that a quorum is not present and make a point of order that a quorum is not present. [...]

REP. ELIJAH CUMMINGS (D-MD): Further proceedings on this motion will be postponed.

I recently received an e-mail from El Tinklenberg requesting early campaign donations for another run at Bachmann. (I sent him money for it last time.) I previously posted here about another state representative who wants to run against her.

To quote Forrest Gump, Sometimes there just aren’t enough rocks.”

Now if only they would pass a law that outlawed cancer….

  2. Ron Beasley says:

The bill just passed 378 – 0 and Bachman voted for it. Bachman and the other Rethuglicans are going to have a lot of splainem to do when they go back home.

  3. Brainster says:

I can't blame you, I bit on this story too. But apparently Bachmann's objection was pro-forma since it had already been agreed that there would be no votes without a quorum.

The GOP is facing down the kooks in their midst, just as the Democrats spent a good part of 2007 and 2008 facing down the 9-11 Truthers. I congratulate both parties for being truly moderate and excluding these issues as crazy.

  4. Jazz says:

The Truthers are not gone yet… far from it. We had a call on the radio show last week from one of them, complete with the quickly cut of chant of “9-11 Was An Inside Job!”

    *sigh*

    Ryan,

Sometimes, I wish I could be more like you. Life would be much easier if I could simply accept what I’m told as fact and not question things that don’t make sense.

It must be nice to be Obama also, with an extra million to fight the release of a document that supports his claims. (He must be doing it for the principle…….Ya, that’s the ticket)

JWest a birther…who'd a thought. Remember to stop at the Red lights, even if you know them to be green.

  9. RememebrNovember says:

For the record, I don't have a colb,, just a birth certificate which allowed me to get a US Passport for which I am treated as a US Citizen on foreign soil. There is no federal mandated format for that, it's a states right issue. This COLB nonsense is truther horseshit. Get the facts, then talk to us.

  10. ham_kimj says:

    Ryan,
I understand it's easier if you don't cloud an issue with the facts but your supposition that Obama is able to fight release of his birth certificate is just not supported with facts. USA Today has enough article today in which the Director of the Hawaii State Dept of Health unequivocally states that the birth certificate is real. The US House of Representative in their resolution commemorating Hawaii's 50th anniversary read: Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barach Obama, was born on August 4, 1961… Is the whole House of Representatives in on this conspiracy? Where has the FBI, CIA, Homeland Security been? Are they all in league with Obama? Get a grip and get over it!

Sorry Ryan I meant my last post for Jwest

Oh please jwest don't change a thing about yourself, I think you're perfect just the way you are.

Take your link to the “The Western Center for Journalism” (WCJ) article… I have to admit when I first saw “The Western Center for Journalism” logo and layout I thought jwest was sending us to a link with legitimate information BUT it didn't take long to realize that their “story” was based on quotes and links to: Newsmax; debbieschlussel.com; bogusbirthcertificate.blogspot.com AND started with:

Editors Note: In December ‘08 a retired CIA officer commissioned an investigator to look into the Barack Obama birth certificate and eligibility issue.

Notice that no where in their article is the name of the retired CIA officer that commissioned the “report” (sic) or who the supposed “investigator” was… It gets BETTER, guess who is on the front page of WCJ today? Floyd Brown, 1/4 of the infamous “Floyd and Mary Beth Brown Duo”. And guess what he's writting about?… CNN’s gross negligence on birth certificate

Thank you, thank you, thank you jwest and keep up those posts… they always so darn thought provoking and informative.

    RN, ham, steve,

I realize that, as a liberals, you believe certain things and see the world in a certain way. That’s OK. But there will be times in your life when a bit of skepticism and common sense will keep you from appearing hopelessly naïve.

When Michael J. Fox told you and your friends that if John Kerry was elected crippled people would walk again, did you believe him?

Aren’t you curious in the least why someone would not only refuse to release a document that purportedly supports their position, but would spend a million dollars to block people from seeing it? Does that seem perfectly logical and reasonable to you?

As your mothers probably said, “If everyone is jumping off a bridge, would you do it too?” Just because the edict has come down from your leftist betters that this question is to be met with derision, it doesn’t mean that you can’t break away, show some intellectual curiosity and ask some relevant questions.

Try being smart. You might like it.

  14. GeorgeSorwell says:

Don't forget–John Kerry Kerry also faked his medals!

  15. SteveK says:

You're just great jwest… You make where your position belongs in the grand scheme of things so… Obvious.
    Keep up the good work!

  16. jwest says:

    Steve,

Thanks. I live for the points.

The left couldn't make the wingnuts on the right look this bad if they spent ten million dollars buying TV time! And it's easy, all we have to do is sit back, roll our eyes and smile. So… to answer your question yes, it does seem perfectly logical and reasonable to me hell, it's a bargain.

  18. Ryan says:

I'm more than happy to question things that don't make sense. Hell, I can even question things that do make sense. However, given the number of crazy people around, we can't just assume that since something is being questioned, there is in fact something sinister going on. “Obama isn't American” goes in the basket with “Vaccines cause autism”, “9/11 was an inside job”, “The moon landings were faked” and “Elvis is still alive”. You're going to need a bit more than a WND article (which probably counts against you if that's how far right you need to go to find people who believe it.)

  19. jwest says:

    Ryan,

Read Tom Maguire. He lays it out better than I do.
