Thanks for Sharing, Governor. Now Shut Up.

Gov. Mark Sanford and Maria Belen Chapur slept with each other more times than he had previously said. Actually, if he’s going to be honest, she is his soul mate. He does promise, though, that he will try to “fall back in love” with his wife.

One other thing, as long as he’s talking. He has had “a handful” of other relationships with women who were not his wife. These relationships “crossed lines” but did not include sex.

That could change, though.

Sanford's (I like the nickname "Sinford") obsessive and detailed commentary on his sex life is beginning to sound less like confessing and more like bragging.

Well, even his most ardent supporters are jumping overboard now. The biggest problem is that many folks down here do not want to hand power over to Lt. Gov. André Bauer, who has many personal problems of his own. Sanford should take your advice, Kathy, and shut up. I can't understand why he feels the need to continue blabbing on about this and digging himself any deeper. Maybe he wants the attention in some sort of sick way. Regardless, I have yet to run into any folks down here in "The Upstate" who feel compelled to defend him anymore. He will most likely be gone by the end of the week.

For me, it's not just about the damage he's doing to his career by his compulsive need to confess -- it's what he's surely doing to his wife. That's always the part of any story that grips me the most -- the personal angle. And when I read this, I thought, "Hasn't he hurt her enough, already? Is it really necessary for him to be telling the media that Maria Belen Chapur is his 'soul mate'? That he's not in love with his wife anymore, but he will 'try' to 'make himself' fall in love with her again?"

I mean, what's wrong with this man?
  • Just why did the Governor talk to AP today, anyway? Simple: he's paving the way for his next job.

He told reporters that he counseled Ms. Chapur on her failing marriage.

    Look out Dr. Phil!

It isn't that I mean to be less empathetic in my approach, but I tend to expect that many politicians are borderline sociopaths to begin with. And, meaning no disrespect to Jenny Sanford whatsoever, many political wives understand this about their "man"...see, e.g. Clinton, Vitter, Craig, Spitzer. Even Jenny Sanford "counselled" her errant husband on how to, or not to, conduct his affair after she learned about it five or so months ago.

Having said that, the publicity the Gov. is actively courting now, was probably not part of the "deal" Jenny signed up for. She has actually stood up quite well and acquitted herself admirably amidst his public sociopathic self indulgence. She is being called "hero" and is admired for her strength and restraint. And, she deserves those accolades. Her approach is far more to be respected than the stand-by-your-man fiction so often displayed in these situations. My impession is that, while she has been hurt and has suffered for her family, she has gained in strength, respect and admiration.
  • I think Sanford is soon to be ex-governor and ex-husband. Wonder how his mistress likes the notoriety. My guess? He's likely to be ex-soulmate too.

"She [Jenny Sanford] has told The Associated Press that he asked her several times to visit the mistress and she refused."

    He's kinky, too!

But seriously.... what in the world is he thinking to ask his wife to meet his mistress... and on which continent? More evidence that he's thinking about himself (and his mistress?) more than his wife.

I wonder if he wants his children to meet his soulmate.... I mean mistress.

"He's likely to be ex-soulmate too."

Hahahaha.... local Argentinean woman meets tall, rich, handsome, powerful foreigner on the dance floor and lures him into her clutches with her forlorn sob story of a failing marriage (which is probably true). Said powerful foreigner takes local woman under his wings and counsels her into the night.... And they become soulmates. Or whatever.

But seriously what kind of woman in a failing marriage hangs around dance floors with rich foreigners?

It sounds as though Maria is as much a piece of work as Sanford is.

If Maria dumps him it probably won't be over the notoriety she is receiving. It will be because of his loss of governorship, power, his loss of his money in the divorce proceedings and his alimony payments. Or the potential loss.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maria actually likes the attention. She seems to be a survivor and will use whatever it takes to further her interests.

Though I've never met her so my opinion could very well change. But don't hold your breath... the more that comes out on this, the more unreal it becomes. Truth is stranger than fiction. And a lot more fun. :)

Can we use the word "douche" here at TMV?

Sanford isn't just a douche, he's an amazingly immature man. Typical of the posturing, moralizing, sanctimonious (can I say douche three times?) type. It's jaw-dropping imbecility. He has the emotional maturity of a 14 year old.

Dude. Dude! For God's sake, shut up!

Why his wife hasn't just stabbed him in the neck I'll never know. No jury containing even one woman would ever convict. Hey, I'm a guy and I'd give her a pass under the legal doctrine of, "this guy's too much of a douche to go on living."

The politician who is a committed family man is becoming the rarity.
  • DLS
There's no excuse for leftist obscession and other misbehavior (once again). Sanford is self-destructing. First, he has now admitted the extent of his affair was greater than previously admitted. Now he has admitted (i.e., begun to reveal) that he has "crossed lines" (improperly) with other women in the past, albeit with protective qualifications. Would anyone be surprised if he admits later he actually did more?

He's a chump. Expunge him from the news and liberal gossip-and-cluck-fest, already.

"The politician who is a committed family man is becoming the rarity."

These days I can't rely on too many to reflect openly on how much of this is related to excess government power, and potential for politicians' fame as well as fortune.

"Expunge him from the news and liberal gossip-and-cluck fest..."

DLS - Sorry, it doesn't work like that. Both sides do it and keep it in the media as long as possible. Remember how long Bill and Monica made headlines?...Barney Frank's male prostitute roommate issue? Or, Foley and the pages? Larry Craig's wide stance?

Americans love this sort of purient voyeurism; the media gives it to them for the ratings; and the opposing politicians and their partisans push it for as long as it will resonate. Both sides, DLS, both sides.

"what in the world is he thinking to ask his wife to meet his mistress"

    ??? "Validation"? Yeech.

"DLS - Sorry, it doesn't work like that [...] Both sides, DLS, both sides."

The media's liberal bias slants things (as does this liberal Web site), though yes, sensationalism anywhere sells (if the media choose to exploit it).

Who are we to laugh in the face of Love? or Line Crossing?

Why sow your seeds in neat, regimented rows, when there is so much fertile sod in the wilds?

    …Amore Sans Frontiers….!
  • StockBoySF
    "Amore Sans Frontiers….!"

LOL! That's right, Sanford has no boundaries and spreads his love around. :)
