California Officially A One Party State

If you’re a Republican member of the California Legislature you might as well just stay home and read.

Preliminary election results show that Democrats will gain 2/3rds control of both house of the state legislature.

Republican influence in the legislature has been somewhat iffy for decades. Democrats rarely if ever entertain legislation proposed by Republicans, more often rejected the GOP bill only to re-introduce it under Democratic sponsorship. The only trump cards Republicans had were 1) if a Republican was governor he could give them some power or 2) when it came to passing taxes and budgets the law requires a 2/3rds majority so Democrats had to at least consult the GOP.

Now with 2/3rd control my guess is that the Democrats under the dome won’t give their GOP colleagues the time of day.

It’s a sad development in what used to be a bipartisan state

Well, I hope they see this as any screwups will be ABSOLUTELY on them so they better fix things as opposed to a chance to run amok with whatever the hell they want to do.

It might be because the GOP in California is no longer remotely moderate. My favorite republicans came out of Ca and they have mostly been shut out of the party or if they are past republicans, not allowed in. So goes the nation. No taxes pledges and other things that tie the hands that allow politicians to compromise and make deals are making the CA GOP impotent. I’d certainly like to see some moderates in the party step up with some reasonable solutions.

After a decade and a half of failed republican rule, I applaud California’s emancipation. I now expect great progress in California.

  • ShannonLeee

Calii has always been more progressive than the rest of the country. The next couple of years will be an interesting experiment.

Carl, what decade and a half ? Republicans haven’t had any real power in California for decades, now they have none.

Democrats have controlled the legislature for 50 yrs.

It’s sad from a variety of perspectives. I generally like balance and hope for a sane opposition party to act as sand-bags against a flood of partisan plans. On the other hand, it’s sad that the GOP has contracted itself into obscurity by not embracing grander ideas (that appeal to more than just aging white men, mostly).

Republicans haven’t had any real power in California for decades, now they have none.

That’s simply not the case Patrick the ‘super-majority’ required to pass the budget has allowed a Republican minority a strangle hold on the budget and through this a strangle hold on the entire state government.

  • PATRICK EDABURN, Assistant Editor

Well Steve it has allowed the GOP to have some input into state government, as I said in my post. Now they have zero input.

  • SteveK

Well Patrick, it appears their “input” wasn’t appreciated by the electorate (their bosses) and they got themselves FIRED.

That in and of itself should show most how their input was valued.

  • PATRICK EDABURN, Assistant Editor

Fair enough Steve, though I somehow doubt you’d feel that way if it was the Democrats being marginalized :)

However we can agree to disagree.

It’s an interesting development. We still have a big fiscal hole, with the passage of Proposition 30 yesterday Democrats have just played the soak-the-rich card, and now with Republicans out of the way, the Democrats fully own the outcomes. What happens next?

  • slamfu

Pretty sure there was a GOP Governor in there sometime not too long ago too. What was his name again….?

  • Carl

    Better check history again Patrick.

We have single party control here in Massachusetts. It is not ideal. I routinely vote for Republicans (or independents) for state offices on the off chance that someone will get it who will at least be able to see the kiddies stealing from the cookie jar.
