Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan in 2005: Social Security is a Welfare Transfer System

Sep 21, 2012 by

“Social Security right now is a collectivist system, it’s a welfare transfer system.”

– Rep. Paul Ryan in a 2005 audio talking about privatizing the “socialist-based system” or social security, “personalizing” it. (From Buzz feed)

That would be the same Social Security program his mother gets a monthly check from. Well, had he made that statement during his speech at AARP event, he would have been roundly booed over this too, just like the audience’s response to his remark about repealing Obamacare.

I think this is a rather shocking and revealing statement. Anyone with a good historical perspective on the social security system, why it came into being, and why it is so important should be concerned about Ryan’s statement.

Ryan is sounds here like a loony fringe element John Bircher. ?This is the GOP’s golden boy??

Shouldn’t the Romney people have picked up on this little gem during the vetting process?

    Randian.

  4. Blue, the GOP echo chamber picked exactly the guy they wanted. They were looking for a guy who met their litmus test, they did not vet him for his capability to attract voters outside the base (within the 47%, if you will).

Ryan .. After his father died he had no problem collecting survivor benefits from SS while in high school and college. Now what benefited him is socialism for others. What a hypocrite…
