What do Arabs make of Senator Barack Obama’s chances of ‘ascending to the throne’ of the U.S. presidency? This op-ed article from Egypt’s Al Gomhuria asks, ‘Is it possible that the psychological and demographic makeup of America would allow such a thing to take place? Will conservatives and Christian fundamentalist fanatics allow a Muslim-born Negro to occupy the highest office in America?!

Claims about freedom and democracy notwithstanding, will the psyche of the American people permit a negro citizen access to the presidency and mastery of the White House?!
Barack Hussein Obama, a senator born to a Kenyan Muslim father, is striving to attain this position … that is the position of master of the world, since America is today the most powerful country on earth.
Although his father was a Kenyan-born Muslim, America is Christian nation … Therefore, Barack joined the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago before studying law at Harvard university.
There is a strong ring of support around the senator. As the youngest presidential candidate (46), he is a favorite among younger voters. And famous television hostess, Oprah Winfrey, who has a program under her name, has stood by Obama throughout the campaign. With Oprah’s help, Obama rallied 18,000 voters in Iowa, where Barack had a surprise first-round victory against his powerful Democratic rival, Senator Hillary Clinton.
There are also a bevy of Hollywood stars coming out for Obama who helped raise $25 million for his campaign, falling just short of the record amount raised by Hillary by a mere $1 million.
Youthful and vigorous, Obama has campaigned under the banner of American renewal and unity.
Recently in an unexpected move, the man who ran against Bush in 2004, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, who still enjoys considerable influence within political circles and among the American people, joined Obama’s campaign.
Kerry chose an Obama rally in the city of Carlston South Carolina to announce that Barack Obama can and will be the next president of the United States.
Every media outlet is talking about this historic opportunity for a Black to reach the presidency of the United States. … Can this happen?
