As we have been covering over recent days, Iranian President Ahmadinejad has been whipping up audiences with talk of how the United States is threatening Iran because it knows that the arrival of the Twelfth Imam – or ‘Mahdi’, is imminent, and that Iran is preparing the way for him.
An article we translated the other day quoted Ahmadinejad as saying that after the appearance of the Mahdi – the Muslim messiah said to have been born in 868, hidden by God at age five, and is still alive awaiting God’s decree for his return – Iran would ‘ Administer the World‘.
An article we translated today by Hayyan Nayyuf of the magazine Iraq of Tomorrow, quotes Ayatollah Hussein Al Mu’ayyid, one of Iraq’s leading Shiite clerics, as challenging Ahmadinejad to ‘corroborate’ this assertion, criticizing his allusion to the Twelfth Imam as ‘political sophistry that exploits religion.’
Meanwhile in Saudi Arabia’s Al Riyadh newspaper, Dr. Muhammad Nahid Al Quwayz analyzes why days ago, Iranian troops trespassed across the Iraq border, seized an oil field and raised the Iranian flag. According to Al Quwayz, the operation proves that Tehran is scheming to create a crisis and is willing to let all “Sunni and Shiite Arabs burn” rather than give up its nuclear program.
Al Quwayz writes in part:
“It’s clear that an iron fist hasn’t squelched the resolve of reformers, which makes it necessary to have an alternate plan for coping with the most serious internal uprising to occur in the Islamic Republic since the Revolution.”
“This increases the likelihood of a military solution, whether carried out by Israel alone or with the cooperation of the Americans. Even without military action, Iran may not be able to tolerate further sanctions, particularly if the Americans manage to gain the support of the Russians and Chinese in this area. … Based on these observations we can explain Iran’s recent move to demand compensation from Iraq for the Iran-Iraq War in excess of $1 trillion. … We can explain all of this as an attempt to open a new front and concoct a crisis that would obstruct the other tracks and justify the use of additional domestic repression.”
