I must admit that when it comes to the man and his work, my views are somewhat mixed. I find some of Jerry’s stuff is absolutely brilliant but much of his slapstick humor goes a bit silly for me. I’ve also heard that when it comes to Jerry Lewis the man he’s not exactly the nicest human being and can often be quite a jerk.
But when it comes to Labor Day weekend I can say nothing but God Bless This Man. For longer than I have been alive this man has been going out every Labor Day Weekend to raise money for a tremendous cause, curing a disease that cripples and kills millions of people.
Since the beginning of this telethon in 1966, they have raised nearly one and a half BILLION dollars to cure this affliction. To be sure there are plenty of controversies attached to the telethon, including allegations from advocates that it tends to enhance stereotypes of the victims as less than complete people. I’m sure Jerry could be more sensitive, but that’s just the kind of guy he is.
However no controversy can erase the fact that this is a tremendous cause and that the telethon has done a great deal in raising money for the cure.
So as you enjoy your holiday, please take a moment to remember Jerry’s Kids.
