When You Lie Down With the Devil….

Pat Robertson explains why Haiti just lost thousands of people to a natural disaster:

“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” he said on Christian Broadcasting Network’s “The 700 Club.” “They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it’s a deal.”

Robertson said that “ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other” and he contrasted Haiti with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic.

Tough to top Ta-Nehisi here:

The next time your wondering why there are so few black Republicans, consider the fact this unreconstructed Confederate was not long ago one of their greatest crusaders. Consider that he is equating the resistance of slavery, with a rejection of Christ.

Incidentally, Matt Yglesias has the background on what event Robertson might be talking about. Unfortunately, for it to fit with his “devil” theory, we’d have to posit that the God of the French colonialists was the ward of slaveowners and the boot on the neck of the slaves — a position you wouldn’t expect Christians to be rushing towards.

Yeah so I assume we cannot expect any humanitarian help for the Haitian people from the Pat Robertson Christians. Because they are all the devil’s minions.

What a jackass. How many people did this fool just kill? Why do we allow these religious potentates to live tax free in America?

Luke 13:4, The tower might fall on Pat Robertson. Better watch out, Pat!

  3. New Cat says:

Robinson isn't making any friends with his statement. I just saw Shepard Smith on Fox criticize Robinson and Shep was clearly angry with Robinson's statement. I don't believe even Christian conservatives will support him on this issue. At first I thought it must be his age that is getting to him. Then I remembered some of the crass things he has said in the past, when he was younger, and realized he is just an insensitive ideologue who has no compassion or love for others.

Even if his statement that the Haitians made a pact with the devil was true, that was a long time ago and no one involved is alive. How can a just God punish his children for sins that they did not commit themselves. Its all just nonsense and an embarrassment to true Christians, who want to help people in extreme need. In fact one could say its a Christian duty to help these poor people. Its time to turn off this pompous hate monger and find real sources of religious inspiration. Don't even bother to listen to the apology, which will surely be forthcoming, it isn't worth the effort to consider.

  4. God Hates The Haitians…

Pat Robertson: And you know, Christy, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it, they were under the heel of the French, uh, you know, Napoleon the third and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact…

I saw this item and was thinking about blogging it, but you beat me to it, which means now I don't have to, which makes me happy. :-)

  6. Father_Time says:

    Ok…thanks for sharing.

  7. Father_Time says:

Who cares if they made a pact yesterday with a friggen coconut tree? They are PEOPLE not devils!

  8. Father_Time says:

Yes you do and you better include the mailing address so I can write those nitwits a nasty letter!

  9. DLS says:

“The tower might fall on Pat Robertson”

Not the World Trade Center towers. They were brought down by gays and feminists (and maybe a few other liberals, too). Now, the new Dubai tower might fall someday, because of Muslims. But this, too, may spare our friend Mr. Robertson.

  10. Father_Time says:

DLS…no really…..I am absolutely certain that you are wacked.

You must seek something….like….oh I don't know, unwacker software or something.

  11. DLS says:

    “unwacker software”

Switch back to right-wing talk radio, maybe?  [grin]

  12. Father_Time says:

Uh no. Now that would be really nuts by another order of magnitude.

  13. ordinarysparrow says:

If the Haitians are to blame for making a pack with the Devil, resulting in a earthquake, then who did we make a pack with to get these ongoing eruptions of Pat Robertson's bile?

  14. ordinarysparrow says:

Oh No. . . Is it possible the Haitians made the pack with Pat Roberson. . .He seems to always have first hand knowledge of these dastardly packs?. . .Could it be?

  16. DLS says:

He might have actually been reserving this explanation for the Big One that is overdue for Southern California (i.e., Hollywood), but since Fallwell is already gone, perhaps he wants to use this line now rather than risk being too dead to use it later.

  17. VeratheGun says:

First of all, it is a PACT, a PACT. Not pack, for god's sake.

Secondly, every time I hear more right wing filth like this, it is a reminder of just whom the Republicans have aligned themselves with. Deny, obfuscate, split hairs, justify all they may, these are the people who share their political philosophy, and indeed are their very BASE.

    Disgusting.

  18. New Cat says:

Don't get your knickers in a twist Father I'm on your side. Just trying to point out that Robertson isn't acceptable even to most Christians. Many liberals are quick to jump on all Christians when one
televangelist makes a stupid statement. I hoped this would be a forum where all points of view could be expressed and people would listen and not jump on each other for different opinions.

  19. kritt11 says:

If you follow his logic, Americans are likewise cursed because of the pact they made with the devil when they revolted against the colonial power that dominated them more than 200 years ago.
    Maybe that's why we've had:
    9/11
    Katrina
    The Civil War
    The Great Chicago fire
    Hurricane Andrew
    The AIDS epidemic
    Pearl Harbor
    The Great Depression
    The Dust Bowl

    LOL

  20. Father_Time says:

Sorry. Its just that stupid statements and by Christian leaders are all to common and there seems to be no repercussion for these stupid statements and egregious acts except from non Christians whom have no fear IN POINTING IT OUT!

  21. Father_Time says:

There were no wars in the name of Christianity….were there?

    :-)

  22. New Cat says:

No offense taken I agree with you. Unfortunately we have no court in the land which can try Robertson for his stupid statement so no immediate punishment will be forthcoming. The sad thing is he is almost forgotten and is considered a has been by most people. The only publicity he gets is when he shoots his mouth off with a negative insensitive comment. Even bad publicity is good for him. Keep pointing it out. There is nothing to fear from that jerk. And thanks for replying.

  23. ordinarysparrow says:

Thank you Vera. . .Truly that was my ignorance. . .

It's the likes of Pat Robertson that led the witch hunts some centuries ago. The Medieval Warm Period ended and the Little Ice Age begun, and harvests started failing. The people in those days had no access to world news and couldn't know that the climate was changing. But they had clerics and leaders like Pat Robertson who saw their chance to increase their takings by finding scapegoats. So the famine was God's punishment for this particular village because they suffered iniquity in their midst. All that was needed was finding the culprit–normally a woman either with some valuable knowledge about healing, or with a mean streak or a temper, whose husband was happy to trade her in for a newer model. And off to the stake she went.

The idea that every setback or disaster must be a punishment from the gods is a superstition much older than the Dark Ages. It's a pagan idea that's well documented in history. In the name of a faith that's all about a loving God, parasites like Robertson keep feeding the naive and the gullible this heathen crap, and the checks keep on coming.

In effect, he's saying that the Haitian slaves shouldn't have wanted their liberty, but should have suffered on and stayed under the French yoke. By the same token, America should forget about the Revolution and the Civil War, and go back to being slave owners under the benevolent rule of the British monarch. Then, perhaps, there wouldn't be any more hurricanes, or what?

  26. DLL83 says:

So, it was the Devil that ended their slavery? I had no idea he was such a nice guy.

IN READING THE WORD OF GOD, If HATI MADE A PACK WITH THE DEVIL, THEN THEY ARE UNDER A CURSE. PSLAM 33:12 SPEAKS ON A NATION WHOSE GOD IS LORD IS BLESSED THEN THOSE WHO ARE NOT AREEEEEEEEE UNDER A CURSE. DEUTERONOMY 28:1-14 TALKS OF THE BLESSINGS OF GOD, WHILE DEUTERONOMY 14-29 SPEAKS OF THE CURSES. AS A CHRISTIAN WE SHOULD STUDY THE WORD AS WE DO ANY BOOK TO SHOW OURSELF APPROVED. ALL THROUGH THE BIBLE YOU WILL SEE BLESSINGS FOR OBEDIENCE AND CURSINGS FOR DISOBEDIENCE. ANYONE WHO READS THE BIBLE AND STUDIES IT SHOULD KNOW THIS PLAIN AND CLEAR. AS FAR A PAT ROBERTSON MENTIONING THIS DURING THIS TIME MAY SEEM OFF TIMING, SO DOES IT WHEN WE AS AMERICANS ARE SUFFERING AND WE WATCH AND HEAR HOW OUR GOVERNMENT IS SPENDING MONEY AS THOUGH THERE WAS NO TOMORROW, BUT THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH, GOD CAN AND WILL REVERSE A CURSE ON A NATION IF THEY WILL HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND REPENTTTTTTTTTTTT GOD WILL HEAL THEIR LAND. PAT ROBERTSON KEEP SPEAKING THE TRUTH AND AS YOU I FEEL AND PRAY FOR THE HATI PEOPLE FOR GOD'S INTERVENTION AND AM A SPONSOR OF OPERATION BLESSINGS.

THANKS PAT FOR SPEAKING THE TRUTH AND TAKING THE NAY SAYERS COMMENTS BE BLESSED

  28. New Cat says:

Ps. 33:12 only speaks of blessing of a nation not curses on a nation.

Duet. 28: 14-29 does speak of curses but only curses on the individual committing the infraction to God and does not speak of curses upon their descendants. The one possible exception in verse 18 Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body…. While this may be applicable to the individuals own offspring but I see nothing to imply that it would apply to all generations thereafter.

I think Pat Robinson probably had good timing with his statement as it would keep the donations from his followers coming in and not diverted to Haiti. And I know that bad things can happen to good people as well as the wicked. We are commanded to help the poor, clothe the naked and protect widows, not pass judgment upon them. Only God will judge the deeds of man not Pat Robertson.

Can’t disagree with you on our Governments spending habits as I feel the same way but it is I believe irrelevant to this conversation. I also don’t think bible study should be a part of this blog but I felt the necessity to reply to you comments to me.

Anyway God bless you for your compassion and charitable works and keep reading the scriptures.
