Newsweek Cover: Obama “The First Gay President”

May 13, 2012 by

No one can accuse the (barely) surviving news-magazines of rolling over and playing dead in this day when print media audience share is shrinking. First we had Time magazine’s provocative breast feeding cover. Now Newsweek has this cover proclaiming President Barack Obama “The First Gay President,” as it touts a piece by the always-must-read-in-full Andrew Sullivan (whose blog is here).

I would be very surprised to learn that Mr. Obama is gay. He has previously supported gay marriage rights, however, in a tight Illinois race in 1996. This was before he didn’t support gay marriage, which he now, again, supports.

Mr. Romney has supported gays’ adoption rights, but never marriage, as far as I can determine.

Since this is a state’s rights issue, covered by DOMA, I’m not sure what difference a presidential candidate’s position signifies. If either vowed to repeal DOMA, that would be a real story.
