Pro-U.S. Credit Rating Agencies Have Declared War on European Union (Magyar Nemzet, Hungary) »
It is getting heated out there in the battle for the 2012 Republican nomination — with signs of if not a party split, then high passions. The latest instance: conservative talker Michael Savage has offered former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the party’s current front-runner, $1 million to drop out of the race. Savage writes this kind of the way he speaks on his show IN UPPER CASE. Here’s part of it:
SAVAGE OFFERS GINGRICH $1 MILLION TO DROP OUT OF THE RACE — WILL ANNOUNCE ON SHOW TODAY
(SUBJECT TO ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS TO BE EXPRESSLY STATED BY DR. SAVAGE, INCLUDING GINGRICH DROPPING OUT WITHIN 72 HOURS OF TODAY)
THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL FIELD HAS COME DOWN TO TWO CANDIDATES WHO HAVE A REAL CHANCE OF GETTING THE NOMINATION: NEWT GINGRICH AND MITT ROMNEY. WHILE IT’S TRUE THAT ROMNEY IS NOT AS STRONG A CONSERVATIVE AS MANY WOULD LIKE HIM TO BE, THE MOST PRESSING ISSUE BEFORE AMERICA TODAY IS DEFEATING BARACK OBAMA. AND THAT IS SOMETHING NEWT GINGRICH CANNOT DO. FOR WEEKS ON MY SHOW, I HAVE ENUMERATED THE REASONS WHY GINGRICH CANNOT SUCCEED IN AN ELECTION AGAINST OBAMA:
WHEN HE WAS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, GINGRICH FAILED TO DELIVER ON HIS SO-CALLED CONTRACT WITH AMERICA.
HE MADE ADS WITH NANCY PELOSI PROMOTING THE FALSE THEORY OF GLOBAL WARMING.
HE’S IN FAVOR OF AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS.
HE’S TAKEN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM FANNIE MAE AND FREDDIE MAC, TWO OF THE MOST CORRUPT FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN HISTORY.
HE’S CHEATED ON TWO WIVES AND LEFT BOTH OF THEM WHILE THEY WERE BOTH SERIOUSLY ILL, WHICH WILL DESTROY HIS CHANCES AMONG FEMALE VOTERS.
HE CALLED THE REPUBLICAN PLAN TO REFORM MEDICARE “RIGHT WING SOCIAL ENGINEERING.”
IN A PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AGAINST OBAMA, REGARDLESS OF HOW WELL HE DOES, ON TELEVISION, HE WILL COME OFF BADLY COMPARED TO OBAMA AND LOOK LIKE NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT HE IS: A FAT, OLD, WHITE MAN.
There’s more on his site, so go to the link to read the rest.
Advice to Michael Savage: Gingrich might not accept the money if you offer it to him to drop out. He would figure that’d look bad.
Why not offer it to him as a historian?
After all: he apparently received incredibly big bucks as a historian before…
FOOTNOTE: Conservative talker Glenn Beck doesn’t like Gingrich either(too progressive for him) but Rush Limbaugh does and Limbaugh is mad at Fox News for not being more deferential (but I predict that will change FAST as Gingrich’s polling numbers climb…).
If Mitt Romney had a sense of humor he’d now bet Savage a can of his hair spray that Gingrich won’t drop out.
Publicity Stunt.
Gingrich will put away millions and millions win or not, just by running.
“Publicity Stunt.”
This was my first thought as well, but then I realized that – probably without intending to do so – Savage has made a deeper point about the GOP’s run for 2012 than I’d normally give him credit for.
In fact I’m shocked to be using the word “deeper” in association with Michael Savage…period.
Yet his publicity stunt speaks to the fact that the GOP Presidential field has been littered with publicity stunts. Both Donald Trump and Sarah Palin were never actually candidates, but they milked the possibility that they might run for all the publicity they could. In hindsight, Herman Cain’s campaign looks less like a serious candidacy and more like a publicity stunt gone bad.
And while I’m sure Newt takes himself very seriously as a candidate, I’m not so sure the voters will take him seriously once his checkered past is once again on display in a general election.
Savage’s offer is a stunt, to be sure, but the message behind it is surprisingly on point: If the GOP hopes to regain the White House, they’ve got to get serious about finding a candidate that can win in the general election, and not just someone that temporarily appeals to Republican primary voters.
Isn’t everything in the current Republican Party either a publicity stunt or part of a massive PR campaign as honest as the arguments the tobacco companies used to defend their product against the science showing its deleterious health effects? Trickle down works! The Laffer Curve still applies at current tax rates! Every wealthy person is a job creator! Homosexual rights threaten real marriage at least and probably all of Western Civilization.
Come on, Jim! You forgot a whole bunch of other ones! Some of them were even enumerated by Mr. Savage…
Savage is selling sophistry and another book deal. Besides being a disgusting display of political masturbation by Savage, it’s good publicity: people gawk at a car wreck.
But at least offering a buyout with money is civilized, and not the despicable violence being threatened against Newt by bottom feeding Liberal talkers on the radio spectrum…
Loco, your first sentence is as true as your second one is amusing. Speaking of “bottom feeding”, when we have people as creepy and disturbing as Beck, Coulter, and Savage warning against someone as creepy and disturbing as Gingrich, there is something truly weird afoot.
You know what isn’t mentioned, and in fact I have never heard it come up in the debates or even on The Daily Show or Colbert Report? The fact that he had to resign in disgrace in ’98 for ethics violations after paying a $300,000 fine to congress. How come that never seems to come up. Its always his marriages, or he’s too liberal, or something, but never that WE ALREADY ELECTED HIM AND HE TURNED OUT TO BE CORRUPT!!!!!
The simple truth is that corruption is not a dealbreaker with today’s GOP. People are not as shocked by this as they should be.
