At his own blog, The Gazette’s Dustin Metzger quotes the following paragraph from this article:
Immigrant advocates said Wednesday that they are weighing a variety of legal and legislative challenges to slow down or halt the Bush administration’s crackdown on illegal workers.
Laura Reiff, co-chairwoman of the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition, said her organization had sought support from Congress to block funding for the enforcement of the no-match rule, which would require employers to fire workers unable to clear up discrepancies between their Social Security numbers and government records.
And wonders:
I know that often whenever the topic of illegal immigration is raised both racist bigots and the immigration advocates who decry them crawl out of the woodwork (just read the source article’s comments), but whatever happened to simply following the law and not turning this into an argument over racism?
Read the rest at Blue Collar Heresy. I agree with Dustin’s take on illegal workers: both the workers and the employers should be punished. This has nothing to do with racism, it is all about something called the Rule of Law. When people break the law they should be punished, it is that simple. One can migrate to America legally – if one chooses to move to America illegally it seems logical and fitting for one to be punished. Not only should the person who lives in America illegally be punished, those who make it possible for him or her to do so should be punished as well.
