A while ago I published a post linking to an article in which an advisor of the Saudi government was quoted as writing that the Kingdom should and would support Iraqi Sunnis once the U.S. withdraws from the country as to prevent genocide and to prevent Iran from having too much power in the region.
Today the AP reports that Saudi civilians are already supporting Sunni militias in Iraq by ‘donating’ millions and millions of dollars to them:
Private Saudi citizens are giving millions of dollars to Sunni insurgents in Iraq and much of the money is used to buy weapons, including shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles, according to key Iraqi officials and others familiar with the flow of cash.
Of course the Saudi government denies the report, but to say that they are not the most trustworthy when it comes to (fighting) terrorism would be an understatement. Hot Air points out that Saudi Arabia is funding “nearly every other Islamic terrorist outfit in the world; [it’s] not going to miss a fight as big as Iraq” and that, although there is reason to be skeptical about this particular AP article, the “Baker report claims money’s coming in from the Kingdom, too.”
Iran is the country representing Shia, Saudi Arabia is, or at least wants to be, the Sunni country… it is not difficult to imagine that it is willing to support Sunni militias in order to prevent Iran from taking over completely in Iraq.
