President Clinton is receiving some extraordinary praise from Iraq – and that nation’s government an equal portion of criticism. After watching President Clinton’s mercy mission to North Korea, Iraqi columnist Mahdi Qasim laments his nation’s lack of leaders like Clinton, who ‘value the lives, the dignity and freedom of their citizens more than anything else, and exert all of their efforts and energy to protect them from the dangers of bloodshed, abuse and death …’
Writing for Iraq’s Sotal Iraq newspaper, Mahdi Qasim writes of former President Clinton and the United States:
“There is a lucky people indeed – lucky that they are afforded such good and decent men. Patriotic and impartial men, who protect their country and the sons of their people. They work to make it prosperous, to build it and modernize it; they want only to see the prosperity of their people, the development of their country and the advancement of its knowledge, its science and its culture. … How many nations would be lucky to have one man like this?! Only one, not more!”
Then of Iraq, Qasim writes:
“Instead, we’re in the midst of this gang of politicians, thieves, lawbreakers, terrorists and planters of car bombs; people who are against the peaceful and defenseless sons of their country and care only for the dirtiest, vilest political competition for obtaining influence and an ever-greater share of power …
“These are the things going through my mind as I watch the satellite TV coverage of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who flew to North Korea and came back accompanied by two female American citizens of Asian descent! They had been imprisoned by the North Korean authorities on charges of spying and violating the border!”
