When reading The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk this past week, I could not help but think: where have true American conservatives gone? Even politicians who present themselves as conservatives are often not much more than populists, lyers and, yes, ideologues. When someone presents himself (or herself) as a conservative, this person often repeats mantras and slogans. It is very seldom, if ever, that one hears a true conservative speak: with a true conservative I mean someone who is in essence not an ideologue, for true conservatism is in essence opposed to any (radical) ideology.
