India and Pakistan Will Have Open Borders In Five Years…Who Says?
This is not a Nostradamus prophecy, but my intuitive belief...and the happenings on the ground in India and Pakistan have confirmed my hunch further during the past two/three years. Whatever the sceptics, or think-tanks, have to say is being challenged practically every day by the realities on the ground. Not many people listen to the good old Voice of America anymore, but … [Read more...] about India and Pakistan Will Have Open Borders In Five Years…Who Says?
A different view from Afghanistan
Why are different countries, including the US, India and Pakistan, taking so much interest in Afghanistan? So much has been written on the subject. But today's article in Al-Jazeerah by an American woman is indeed fascinating. This writer's story is datelined Kabul. Jane Stillwater writes under the heading "Pakistan, Afghanistan & Iran: Sibling rivalry rears its ugly … [Read more...] about A different view from Afghanistan
Did You Know There is a “Wine Crisis” in Europe?
According to the BBC: Winemakers will be paid to dig up struggling vineyards as part of radical EU proposals to tackle over-production across Europe. Brussels' initiative is the most far-reaching attempt to date to soak up Europe's so-called "wine lake". Winemakers face economic problems, with falling domestic consumption, excess production and popularity of New World … [Read more...] about Did You Know There is a “Wine Crisis” in Europe?
Quote Of The Day: Why Karl Rove Is Winning On The War Issue
Andrew Sullivan sees the Democrats as blowing it on the war issue:The Democrats, alas, seem hopeless to me. Their ambivalence about the war before and during it makes them seem unreliable stewards of a fight we have no choice but to join. Their flirtation with withdrawal only reinforces this impression. But they do have an opening, if they only had the conviction. If a … [Read more...] about Quote Of The Day: Why Karl Rove Is Winning On The War Issue

“An Oasis of Peace in Iraq”
Not a day passes without the horrible news of death, violence and suffering from Iraq making headlines in the media. So I was quite surprised when I read a newspaper report today that the Kurdish region of Iraq is reported to be largely peaceful. "Violence and suffering disfigure Iraq on a daily basis. But not everywhere is blighted. The Kurdish region is largely peaceful, and … [Read more...] about “An Oasis of Peace in Iraq”
TMV Himself May Be Unable To Post Today
It's 1:35 a.m. PST and TMV has just gotten in from a day of driving and performing. He will be up at 5:30 am for another day that entails long drives and shows in two southern California counties. Today may be one of the ONLY days since he started this site when TMV cannot post AT ALL. But please keep checking back because our always independent co-bloggers may have some … [Read more...] about TMV Himself May Be Unable To Post Today
Original Sin
If TMV counts any judicial originalists among its number, I have a question for y'all: Originalists seem to hate it when American courts cite to foreign sources of law (aside from English common law). But there is a long history of such citation, dating back to the founding era. Isn't this a paradox? How to originalists justify this seeming break with their own philosophy? … [Read more...] about Original Sin
Us and them: How the Iraqi insurgents treat American soldiers
You all know by now the sad, horrific story of Privates Kristian Menchaca and Thomas L. Tucker. How they were captured by Iraqi insurgents (Zarqawi's successor, to be precise), brutally tortured, and beheaded. Who is not filled with rage? Liberals and conservatives, moderates and independents, Democrats and Republicans. Surely all good and decent people find this abhorrent. … [Read more...] about Us and them: How the Iraqi insurgents treat American soldiers
The dream of Republican dominance
No, not my dream. Karl Rove's. At the Times, this past Sunday, James Traub looks at Rove's attempt, now almost comical, to build a long-term Republican majority out of the Bush presidency similar to the one Rove's hero, Mark Hanna, built out of the McKinley presidency. In this recurrence of the same, Bush is McKinley, Rove is Hanna, and 2000 was 1896 all over again. How … [Read more...] about The dream of Republican dominance
House Leadership Dooms Immigration Bill
House Speaker Denny Hastert and Majority Leader John Boehner have taken a decision that almost certainly means there will be no immigration bill passed by this Congress. Yesterday the leadership announced that House committees will hold a series of "field hearings" around the country during Congress' August recess ... meaning that a House-Senate conference to reconcile the … [Read more...] about House Leadership Dooms Immigration Bill
Murdered American GIs Were “Brutally Tortured”
Look at this face. Because it is believed to be the face of the "new" Al Qaeda chief in Iraq who, in a clear effort to earn his terrorist stripes and make a big international name for himself, is reportedly taking "credit" for brutally murdering two American GI's — in keeping with the tradition of the man he replaced, the late, unlamented al-Zarqawi. Yesterday was a … [Read more...] about Murdered American GIs Were “Brutally Tortured”
TMV’s Personal Note To Readers
Over the next few days it's going to be very difficult for TMV to post as usual. The reason is driving logistics: For instance, yesterday started with a meeting a school, to talk about TMV's nephew, then a show at a library in San Diego at 10 a.m. Then a four hour drive to Los Angeles for another show and a three hour drive back. This will be repeated today and tomorrow. Due … [Read more...] about TMV’s Personal Note To Readers
We Was Used!!!
That's the conclusion of Truthout.org in their non-apology/explanation to their readers. A taste:Yes, it does appear that Truthout was used, but not lied to or misled. The facts appear to have been accurate. We reported them, and in so doing, apparently became an instrument. From all indications, our reports, first on May 13 that Rove had been indicted, and then on June 12 … [Read more...] about We Was Used!!!
What’s Going On In Iraq?
There are many stories about the war-torn country, but Sean Aqui has a unique perspective...Reporters are criticized for not covering “good newsâ€?, while others counter by pointing to the high death toll among journalists in Iraq, and note that if Iraq is so dangerous reporters can’t leave the Green Zone, that says all we need to know about the security … [Read more...] about What’s Going On In Iraq?
