Santa Lives in Chelsea
I always like looking for good stories to post for Christmas and this one is perfect. A couple in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City started getting letters addressed to Santa. They had no real idea why they were getting the letters, they live on 22nd street and so there did not seem to be any logical reason for them to get the letters. Reporters have tried to … [Read more...] about Santa Lives in Chelsea

Singers’ Art (and Talent) Always Endures
It's always touching how many singers retain their pizzaz no matter how many years passed, their personal tragedies and time's physical toll. Here's Clarence "Frogman" Henry as a young man singing "Ain't Got No Home" Now a short clip of him in later years dog the same song on 2/11/09: … [Read more...] about Singers’ Art (and Talent) Always Endures
ALL IS BRIGHT!! Richmondites Strive To Be Seen From Space! Merry Christmas to All (Guest Voice) by Martha Randolph Carr
Merry Christmas to All! ... By Martha Randolph Carr... There is something about the Christmas season that makes everyone believe in the possibilities just a little bit more and they carry that good cheer with them everywhere. Just for This Time, Rest and Make Room at ‘The Little Inn of the Heart’ for Peace… In Us, With Us, Through Us… for Others
Peace: the best definition of Peace I know is Live and Let Live. For, as we say, in this time of year...the Child of Love is born on a silent night, a holy night... a Child of Love who is the Master of Peace, who ever teaches those who 'are as lonely as an owl on the ridgepole' with no one to speak to. We are learning too, via science, what the old women have always said is … [Read more...] about Just for This Time, Rest and Make Room at ‘The Little Inn of the Heart’ for Peace… In Us, With Us, Through Us… for Others
“Take Heaven, Take Peace, Take Joy”
Christmas always recalls Eric Sevareid, one of the 20th century's best journalists and a writer with gifts far beyond reporting the news. I published an essay of his twice in different decades in different magazines. Herewith, excerpts: "Christmas offers us peace in one hand but in the other it carries a sword. The peace it offers is the love we felt in childhood and may … [Read more...] about “Take Heaven, Take Peace, Take Joy”
Merry Christmas
Yes, I may be a heathen but I'll wish you all a merry Christmas anyway - it's the modern solstice holiday. My Viking ancestors still call it Yule or the festival of lights but in reality it has become a shopping feeding frenzy and has little to do with the manufactured celebration of the birth Christ. Here is Ober Ammergau at Christmas circa 1970 that catches the real spirit … [Read more...] about Merry Christmas

Finding The Christmas Star
With Christmas Eve upon us I thought I'd offer my annual post on the origins of the Christmas Star (per astronomy) and thus offering thoughts on when he was really born. Most of us know that Christ was not really born in December or the year zero. A number of people have tried to look first to the Bible for clues about what the star did and when, then they went outside the … [Read more...] about Finding The Christmas Star
Christmas Eve Treat: Two Legends In a Christmas Shopping Comedy Show
For the second year we're posting the famous -- and way ahead of its time -- Jack Benny Christmas program aired in 1960 on CBS. It contains two LEGENDS: Jack Benny, whose comedy timing, glances at the audience (which prolonged the laughs by the way) and cheapskate character helped create the situation comedy on radio and successfully dominated TV ratings for more than a decade. … [Read more...] about Christmas Eve Treat: Two Legends In a Christmas Shopping Comedy Show
We Need a Little Christmas
WHOEVER SAID that the only REALLY talented people are stars. Here's a really talented person singing a Christmasy song (by Jerry Herman from "Mame") on You Tube. Perfect for Christmas or any day (her voice and the song): And if you don't know the lyrics, here's the cast of Glee singing it with Lyrics on the TMV screen: … [Read more...] about We Need a Little Christmas

Christmas Has Become Better Every Year (Guest Voice)
Christmas Has Become Better Every Year by Tom Purcell I still wish I hadn't peeked in the attic that year. It was Christmas 1972 and I was 10. It was the first year when I no longer believed in Santa Claus. Until that point, Christmas had been a magical time for me. A few weeks after Thanksgiving, I would join with my father to pick out our tree. He'd wear his … [Read more...] about Christmas Has Become Better Every Year (Guest Voice)
An ‘Assange’ On Both Your Houses!: Novaya Gazeta, Russia
Those who have criticized WikiLeaks and its founder for targeting U.S. misdeeds and not Russia's or China's are about to get their wish. And in terms of Russian politics, this is sure to be a Battle Royal. That's because Russia's Novaya Gazeta, a newspaper partly owned by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, has just entered into a partnership with WikiLeaks. And … [Read more...] about An ‘Assange’ On Both Your Houses!: Novaya Gazeta, Russia
Chavez Gets New Powers
Looks like Hugo will pretty much be able to do what he wants. Among the new powers are an ability to rule by decree and the power to ban people from writing anything on the Internet that: "foments anxiety or disturbs public order," "incites or promotes disobedience of the current legal order," or "incites or promotes hatred or intolerance." So pretty much he can ban any … [Read more...] about Chavez Gets New Powers
