A Former Top Aide To Ross Perot Has Some Advice For Senator Joe Lieberman in Lieberman’s bid to be re-elected as an independent. And Orson Swindle’s advice might not be what you think. Two highlights of a post that needs to be read in its entirety:
I think the moderates of our country are getting pretty fed up and if there was less intentionally built-in mechanics preventing a third party, we might just have conditions to launch one. However, the Dems and Reps have pretty well set the system up to make it almost impossible….
….As to tips for Lieberman — he is trapped. He is what he is and the lines have been drawn essentially on one issue in his state: His support for the war. Those who have believed in him can carry the day for him (because they will have help from the Rs) but they seem to be losing ground. Seems to me his five best moves are just one: Get those who have stuck with him in the past to keep on sticking!!
Meanwhile, Someone Who Worked With Howard Dean has signed up to work on Senator John McCain’s campaign…is taking a lot of criticism for it…and Bull Moose has some thoughts on that.
An Excruciating Night At The Emmeys is pretty much how Ann Althouse describes it. Among the many tidbits you’ll find in her piece:
The Emmy show gets off to a spectacularly bad beginning with a prerecorded comedy sketch. We see Conan O’Brien on a plane, asked by a flight attendant if he’s nervous, and he says, “What could possibly go wrong?” There’s an explosion that rocks the plane, and then there’s a cut to a beach, with Conan crawling out of the surf and the plane, in the background, sinking into the ocean. The folks on the laugh track are yukking it up. That would have been pushing it, considering the recent foiled terrorist plot, but with a plane crash in the news today — 49 people were killed — it’s just atrocious. Don’t they have the sense to pull it? The message is, we’ve got this preprogrammed, and there’s nobody here with a brain.
A “brain?” Remember: this is network television…

Moderates Under Attack As “Thought Control” Returns In Japan: Steve Clemmons looks at a troubling development in Japan “the rise in intimidation tactics — verbal and sometimes violent — that hawkish nationalists in Japan are directing at intellectuals, journalists, business leaders, and even some politicians who have questioned Prime Minister Koizumi’s flirtation with symbols of Japan’s past manic militarism.”
He goes into detail, quoting a column he wrote for the Washington Post op-ed page, and adds:”Japan does need a new nationalism — but this nationalism that is silencing moderates is not characteristic of either a healthy nationalism or a healthy ally.”
