Iran Test Fires Missiles

Iran’s in-your-face stance continues as it test fire short-range missiles, with some cable reports saying long range tests will come in coming months. The New York Times reports:
Iran test-fired short-range missiles as its elite Revolutionary Guards began war games on Sunday aimed at boosting the Islamic Republic’s deterrent capabilities, official media reported.

The missile maneuvers coincide with increased tension in Iran’s nuclear dispute with the West, after last week’s disclosure by Tehran that it is building a second uranium enrichment plant.

State radio said the Guards on Monday would test-fire the Shahab 3 missile, which Iranian officials say has a range of around 2,000 km, potentially putting Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf within reach. It has been tested several times before.

Iran’s English-language Press TV said two short-range missiles as well as a multiple missile launcher were tested on the exercise’s first day.

It showed footage of a missile launch in desert-like terrain, leaving a vapor trail.

“Iran tests two short-range missiles,” it said in a scrolling headline, naming them as the ground-to-ground Fateh (Victorious) missile and the Tondar (Thunder) naval missile.

The Revolutionary Guards said “the drill aims to maintain and boost the country’s armed forces deterrent capabilities,” Press TV said.
As has been evident for some time now, Iran seems to be almost defying the U.S., Israel and other countries to try and stop them from moving towards nuclear weapons. This is just the latest nose-thumbling act.

A Blog for All agrees:
That’s clearly putting a thumb in the eye of the West and the US in

particular.

The Iranian tests often coincide with statements of bravado and threats against those who might seek to restrict Iran’s nuclear technologies. This is little different.

Which brings up the point that unilateral nuclear disarmament and negotiations with no real threat of reprisals (and no, unenforced U.N sanctions and 'you were a very naughty boy again' resolutions do not count) will not bring us (by us I mean the US in particular and the free world in general) the security we need against those with very different agendas.

They are not, as we popularly like to call them, madmen, but rather politicians and leaders that have long-term goals that are in direct opposition to our values.

Unfortunately, we currently have as a leader a man who seems intent on capitulating on just about every point to our enemies in the foreign policy and national defense arenas.

BTW - 10 days of vacation was great for us all, especially my daughter. Good to be back home, though.

I anyone (other than liberals) actually surprised by this news?

    Acquiring weaponized nukes? No surprise.
A secret nuclear facility? No surprise.
    Testing missles? No surprise.

Detonates a nuclear weapon over Tel-Aviv? Stand by.
  • JD, I'd bet you your lifetime salary that Iran never pre-emptively detonates a nuclear device over Tel-Aviv. Their entire country would have 12 minutes to live.

GD...as close as Pakistan and India were to nuking each other into oblivion during the Clinton years, I suggest you not make that bet. Also, Israel isn't Iran's only enemy in the region.
  • no one really knows "how close" India and Pakistan came to nuclear confrontation. My point is that while conservatives seem to think the Iranian mullahs are suicidally insane, I'm not convinced. They do know they would not survive if they attack Israel, and I would feel quite safe in making the bet. These mullahs may pay lip service to supporting suicide bombers, for instance, but none of them has strapped on the bombs personally. Attacking Israel is the same thing. They know they would die and put an end to their country. Not gonna happen.
