After going on record that he hopes President Obama will fail—yes,”his policies”—Rush Limbaugh, the Conservative icon, got a little more specific today.
Scanning my radio for more news about the stimulus bill that was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, without a single Republican vote, I happened to hear Mr. Limbaugh talk about it.
I thought I heard him say something to the effect that not only did he want the President to fail, but that he also wanted the stimulus package to fail, and something about wanting it to blow up in their faces.
Incredulous, I paid more attention, and then I heard it again
More about him wanting the stimulus package to fail, to blow to smithereens and for it not to do a single thing that has been promised
Wow, heavy stuff.
I listened more intently while Mr. Limbaugh eloquently explained why he wanted the stimulus bill to fail, including that when it does it may teach a lesson to those poor people who are hoping for Obama to help them with a new home, a new car, a new job…
Before concluding his magnificent performance, Mr. Limbaugh again repeated his hopes for the stimulus package and for our nation’s economy, iterating that he he wanted the stimulus package to fail, to blow up in their faces (It wasn’t clear to me whether he meant only Democrats’ faces, or other Americans’), and even hoping that the stimulus plan prolongs the recession.
Now, I am sure Mr. Limbaugh has some profoundly sincere and valid reasons for wishing this upon America, and I am sure they can be found at his web site.
But, to be frank, I think he could have made his point a little less callously.
Some will say that Democrats wanted Bush to fail, including in the war in Iraq. Even if that was the case on the part of a very, very few, there are other ways of opposing a policy, a philosophy you disagree with, short of hoping for your country’s economy to fail…and just to teach “them” a lesson.
That’s called “Cutting Off Your Nose to Spite Your Face,” and if we continue to do this, pretty soon we may not have a face left to “spite.”
