A new Fox News poll finds former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain on the rise faster than a thick pan pizza — as GOP voters continue to show signs that they are not ready to hold their noses and give definitive support to previous front-runner Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney:
Herman Cain takes the lead in the Republican presidential nomination contest as GOP voters continue to deny Mitt Romney clear front-runner status.
A Fox News poll released Wednesday shows support for Cain has quadrupled among GOP primary voters since late August. At that time, he stood at 6 percent. After three September debates, he jumped to 17 percent. And now Cain leads the pack at 24 percent.
While it’s the first time Romney has trailed Cain, it’s the second time he’s been ousted from the lead since July. Romney receives 20 percent — a new low for him. That’s down from 23 percent last month and a high of 26 percent in early August.
And Texas Gov. Rick Perry who found that his supposed moonlighting as a comedian doing a set about Barack Obama’s birth certificate bombed and hurt his chances to be the GOP’s 2012 opening act? To quote the great Tony Soprano, “Fugeddaboudit…”
Newt Gingrich now comes in third with 12 percent — edging out Rick Perry. The former speaker — like Cain — has seen his support quadruple since late August.
Perry’s support has dropped to 10 percent, down from 19 percent in September. After his mid-August announcement, Perry captured 29 percent of the vote and took the front-runner role from Romney.
At 9 percent, Ron Paul stays in the top five.
Perry’s one consolation: at least he’s (marginally) more popular than Congress.
But just give him time…
I am not one who believes that successful businessmen will make decent politicians and presidents. And it is much less likely to happen when a businessman tries to make the jump in one step like Cain. But at least Romney has been a governor. And he was one in an over overwhelmingly Democratic state were he needed broad support to get anything done. He can make a legitimate claim even today that he has more experience and is more qualified to be president than Obama.
If Romney could win the nomination and quickly turn around and convince the American people that he didn’t really mean about 70% of what he said in the primaries I think he could beat Obama.
If that happened and if the Democrats are not planning to behave as badly as the Republicans have as the minority party then there is a chance that we could count on government being a positive force in society again. But admittedly it is only a small chance.
I watched Cain run for governor here in Georgia. He is a gaff bomb just ready to go off. He couldn’t even beat our current governor, who at the time, was a Congressman looking to get out of Congress before the investigation into his supposed corruption started.
I think Cain has the advantage of being the last candidate to decide to run. Reps have no one else to run too. He may win the nomination by default. Obama Inc will destroy Cain. Reps need to pull their heads out.
I’m one who doesn’t think professors with little management experience make good politicians and/or presidents. But some people feel there are exceptions, for instance some liberals still have Obama up on the old pedestal. Perhaps Cain is mot the best example of a businessman to politician convert, but to exclude that whole group is short sighted. Perhaps we should go back to electing farmers.
Businessmen make bad politicians because when you run a business, you are essentially a dictator. You have relatively simple goals, make money, make profit, rinse repeat. If something isn’t making money, you can cut it out or change it. Can’t do that as a politician. Cant get rid of old people, can’t let people go without running water and electricity. You have to take care of EVERYONE. Thats why these guys come to DC and act like they are going to apply business sense to govt problems and everything will work out never ever ever make it work out.
Mabye this continuing comedy is in fact a Karl Rove deep cover plan to give D’s a false sense of security and prep R’s for the one true messiah. There’s still time for a knight in shining armor (Jeb?)to come galloping into the fray right?
Well, maybe Herman Cain is the guy we need. The country could use a good motivational speaker and there are still pockets to pick.
Give Pizza a Chance and try not to Duck the issue.
Perhaps we should go back to electing farmers.”
As someone who comes from a long line of farmers (my own parents broke the tradition) I’m on board with that idea duck. Most of the farmers I’ve known had more good sense and were more honest than most politicians.
Slamfu: Politicians main goal is to get reelected. Businessmen, the ones in larger firms, need to pay attention to shareholders and are sometimes aided and directed by directors. I’ll take one of them to a professor anytime.
JS, I was referring to the very early leaders who were gentlemen farmers, sort of like businessmen, like most current farmers have to be.
Mr. or Ms. “D. Duck” (Donald = Mr.?): So much as well with some of the worst, most ridiculous hype some on the farther left have with Elizabeth Warren, for example. Ugh.
Meanwhile, business managers would be far better than politicians who just want to buy votes with money we either don’t have or which was not taken from people in a sensible and even a moral manner.
Farmers as model federal officials? Perhaps, yes, but don’t forget scientists and even better, engineers (not social and economic engineers, liberal conceit and worse, but real engineers). Perhaps some accountants to keep costs in line would be of help, too; they could function as check-and-balance against the more bold or ambitious engineers.
