Is the United States shielding a terrorist that is not only responsible for a number of terrorist attacks, including the bombing of a civilian airliner in 1973 and most recently an attempt on the life of President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela? According to Venezuela’s state press agency Agencia Bolvariana de Noticias, a man named Luis Posada Carriles, who it has been established was a CIA operative in the 1960s and 70s, was involved in a plot to kill Chavez that was foiled two weeks ago.
The article, which comes in the form of a communique from from President Chavez’ political party, The United Socialist Party of Venezuela, rails against Venezuela’s independent media for making fun of Chavez’ allegations, and is in the form of a series of demands:
“The Venezuelan and Latin American ultra-right continue their attempts to assassinate the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, this time taking advantage of the inauguration ceremony of the new president of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes. … be advised that the person behind these plans is a Venezuelan national and terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, a fugitive from justice who is protected by the judiciary of the United States and by counter-revolutionary mafia that is active there. [a reference to the Cuban exile community in south Florida]. … We know, from the sinister interference of the CIA in Latin America, that after discredit and moral death are sown, assassination, crime and physical annihilation follow. … We again demand that the government of the United States extradite Luis Posada Carriles to our country.
“President Obama: To extradite Posada Carriles to Venezuela would be an act of justice toward all Latin American people. Show your goodwill toward our nation and the entire continent. We want to put an end to impunity and punish a terrorist who has bathed in the blood of our entire greater homeland.”
