I’d like to think that when God spoke the world into existence, it sounded more like a melody and less like a command, more like a song than an instruction.
We try to make the way we communicate truth hierarchical. We give the sermon precedence over the song, the doctrine authority over simple heartfelt tears; we lift up the wise man at the expense of the foolish child. We say power and clarity trumps weakness and reckless abandon. Too often we live by what’s written on stone, not by what’s written on sincere hearts.
My faith is as much song as sound theology, it is as much dance as it is accurate doctrine. My faith is as much heartfelt unashamed weeping as it is point by point explanation. And I see my God in the grass, in the mountain and in the endless seas. And I see my God in the questions that can only find comfort in loving, safe embraces. I hear my God in the melody and the silence, in the rhythm and the reason, in the written and whispered Word.
I am formed and have been formed by a Creator who is unencumbered by my insecurities. He is content with His voice and I shall be as well.
