The U.S. fatal historical blunder with Iran had grave consequences
by Dr. Brian Alikhani
The chaos began in 1978 shortly after I immigrated to the U.S. as an Iranian high school student. My country of origin was all over the news as the Iranian Revolution took hold, and the chaotic situation back home forced me to remain in the United States.
I wrote my historical memoir, “Untethered,” to draw attention to the crucial events during this time that allowed Ayatollah Khomeini, an exiled cleric, to rise to power in Iran during the late 1970s, ultimately slinging the country into a period of darkness.
Since then, I have wondered how the codes of honor in Iran disappeared. How did Iran go from its Literacy Corps to stoning women to death? I believe that the Iranian revolution of 1979 replaced the truth with deceit. Elegance was exchanged for clumsiness. Contention overrode harmony. The world declined deeply and wrote its darkest pages in history.
Serious mistakes and miscalculations made by the governments of the U.S. and U.K. during the late 1970s continue to affect future generations worldwide. We are still paying for the unintended consequences of President Jimmy Carter’s foreign policies, which created a vacuum of power in the Middle East that could not be trusted.
Terrorism is on the rise, and the western world celebrates the Iranian nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Fundamentalists – a rotten bunch of bloodthirsty rulers.
