(See update below)
Over the skies of Norway, something was happening besides the President’s arrival to pick up his Nobel prize. A truly strange light show took place which absolutely does not look like any permutation of the Northern Lights that I’ve ever seen. It went on for at least ten minutes, twisting in outward moving spirals with some sort of strange blue-green beam coming out of the center. I have to agree with Allahpundit… in terms of “freaky” this may be the “freaky deakyest” to come round in my lifetime. Here is a still shot and a collection of videos taken of the event for you to check out.
What could this be? As I said, the Northern Lights seems a very unlikely explanation. Others are saying it was a rocket test by the Russians gone astray. But that’s an awfully neat, circular spiral for an errant missile and it lasted a long time. And where was the rocket? Is it possible that this wasn’t happening in our atmosphere at all, but instead was some sort of supernova type event far out in the universe which simply looked as if it were close by through optical tricks of the atmosphere? You tell me. I certainly don’t have any answers for you. But it was definitely weird like something right out of a sci-fi film.
UPDATE: Mystery solved. As some already predicted in the comments section, the Russians have fessed up and it was a sub launched missile test which underwent a catastrophic failure of the third stage. Who would have guessed it could produce such a spectacular light?
