I’m obviously delighted to see DeLay indicted–but by itself, that’s not news. What’s important is the reaction, how are people treating the issue, and what does it mean for ’06? Short answer: Democrats should make into the premier topic of conversation. Power-mad Republicans is an issue with resonance, staying power, and wide appeal. It also has the benefit (so rare in politics) of being true and fair game.
And Republicans?
Well, their choice of Roy Blunt as DeLay’s replacement will be parsed infinitely, but I think the message is clear. Get rid of Tom DeLay, keep Tom DeLay in spirit. Blunt is DeLay’s top disciple–but he can survive without him. Putting him in charge means letting DeLay rot but continuing to follow his “principles” (if you can call them that without gagging).
