Joe made an important observation in an earlier post on the differing interpretations of the Saddam execution. The conventional wisdom is that Shi’ites and Kurds are happy that Saddam has died, and Sunnis are despondent that the last leader who privileged them in Iraqi society has now passed away. But anybody hoping that the trial and execution would help the Iraqi nation turn the page toward a new era of multi-sectarian, multi-ethnic democracy must be terribly disappointed by some of the taunting in the execution chamber itself. No, not just the various “Go to Hell” or “You’re a murderer” statements, but, more ominously ‘Moqtada, Moqtada, Moqtada.‘ The leaked videotape with sectarian taunts by Moqtada al-Sadr’s supporters suggests to Sunnis that this execution was little more than a sectarian assault and not a just punishment for crimes against humanity. Perhaps nothing better signifies the failure of post-Saddam Iraq than the fact that voices from within Saddam’s execution chamber chanted the name of the man who, more than anybody else, has duplicated Saddam’s ability to terrorize the Iraqi public.
