Today, the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee awarded Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo the Nobel Peace Prize – but his chair went empty. Beijing refused to allow him, his wife or any of his relatives to travel to Oslo and accept the award. According to this editorial from China’s state-run Global Times, awarding the Prize to Liu Xiaobo is part of a long-running Western conspiracy to obstruct China’s ‘peaceful rise’ and is a ‘political farce.’
The Global Times editorial says in part:
Tomorrow will see the ceremony for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, which has been awarded to Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese dissident who has devoted himself to subverting the government. Furthermore, at the invitation of the Nobel committee, several dissidents hostile to the Chinese government will converge on Oslo from around the globe.
In regard to whether Liu Xiaobo deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, a majority of Chinese people disagree with the Nobel Committee. The key problem is that the committee, acting like a spectator booing China’s performance, is overseeing a political farce. Moreover, there is copious evidence that mainstream political forces in the West have participated in and dominated this conspiracy. The West is using this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to sound the charge against China’s ideology, aiming to undermine its benign surroundings for future development.
The West has shown great creativity in conspiring against China. With its ideology for the moment remaining dominant, the West hasn’t ceased harassing China with all kinds of tricks, such as the Nobel Peace Prize.
