A San Antonio area school district just named a high school after Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Two funny stories result:
“Are you the guy from Fiesta Texas?” a student in a special education class asked the justice as he shook his hand.
The student wasn’t thinking about legal arguments and precedents. He was thinking about the man in the dark suit and bow tie who dances wildly on Six Flags theme park commercials.
If you look at the picture in the article, I’d submit that the mistake was understandable. There IS a stunning resemblence.
Number two is something I noticed myself. What do y’all draw from this?
Stevens, 85, said he was the one who was honored. With the energy of a man decades younger, he briskly walked the shiny new corridors of Stevens High School, which opened in August.
[…]
“I’m totally impressed,” he said. “It’s a beautiful place.”
Just how many decades younger are we talking about here? Maybe it’s just me, but when I see “totally” used in that matter (as opposed to “very”, “extremely”, or “quite”), I think more along the lines of a Valley Girl than an 85 year old Supreme Court Justice.
But snarking aside, I extend my congratulations. Justice Stevens is a great man, and this is I hope just one of the many honors that will be bestowed upon him for his generations of service to America.
