This week is Veterans Day and a time for all of us to remember those who have served.
But it is also worth remembering those who serve back at home. Families make HUGE sacrifices for our nation, they give up months and years with their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives.
Beyond that many see their loved ones come home wounded, having to spend weeks or months in painful and difficult rehab and surgery. And of course some face the worst news, the word that the person they love more than anyone in the world has made the ultimate sacrifice.
For these families the news often means travel, either to be close to the veteran in the hospital or to Dover to meet the flag draped coffin.
Now imagine not only facing this burden but having to stay at a hotel of motel full of people who have no idea what you are going through. Tourists having fun at vacation spots, businessman on the job, maids doing their regular jobs and so on. The pain is amplified seeing those who have ‘normal’ lives.
That is the reason for the Fisher House foundation, a non profit organization that builds and maintains a network of homes where families can stay during this time of need. Located near military bases, hospitals and similar facilities it allows these people who have given so much to our country to be with those who share the burden.
The morning radio show I listen to is working to raise money to help fund a local Fisher House. If you can give even the smallest amount I am sure the families of our servicemembers would be very grateful and on a personal note I would be very appreciative.
You can also give to a facility closer to home if you want.
