With President Obama off on his summer/birthday holiday I’ve been bemused by how even something as simple as summer vacation can show the hypocrisy that will show up in politics.
When President Bush took summer vacations we always heard voices from the left railing about how terrible it was for him to ‘goof off’ when there was important work to be done. These voices were countered by people on the right who defended him.
Now that it is President Obama, the roles are reversed. Those who found vacations horrible just a few years ago suddenly find them perfectly fine and those who found them fine now have decided they are bad.
Of course this is hardly new, we’ve had critics of Presidential vacations back to the days of FDR, or probably back to the days of George Washington.
But it is bemusing.
Just for the record, I didn’t have a problem when Bush took vacations nor do I have an issue with Obama doing the same. Being President is a hard job and you need to relax some. Besides, while the media loves getting good ‘B Roll’ of the President relaxing, golfing, shooting hoops, etc the fact is that a Presidential vacation is only a semi-holiday as they still work every day.
So maybe we all need to lighten up……
Then again if everyone made sense, what would we have to write about 🙂
