Today is primary day in Chicago and since the Republican voters of the city can meet in a small room it means that the next mayor will be a Democrat (correction from earlier post, I had forgotten they went to primary/runoff versus primary general).
According to the official returns Rahm Emanuel leads Gery Chico (the closest thing we got to a reformer) by a commanding 55-25 margin with almost 75% counted. Given the margin I doubt we will see any sort of runoff which means Rahm is going to be da Mayah. He’s winning every ward so it does not seem he has any weak areas left.
EMANUEL WINS.
Right now the City Council is 49D-1R but the incumbent Republican is retiring. The 41st ward is the only place that would have a chance of electing another Republican but right now Democrat Mary O’Connor leads Republican Maurita Gavin by a 30-25 margin, setting up a runoff. The odds are though that O’Connor (who is the machine candidate) will win, making Chicago a complete one party system.
