Many observers have commented that Bob Schieffer did the best job of any of the moderators for the Presidential Debates. I would tend to agree and it is for this reason that I would strongly encourage people to take a look at his newest book.
I had the pleasure of reading it recently and found it to be thoroughly entertaining. The book is basically a compilation of his end of the show commentaries from Face The Nation. These commentaries began following the death of President Richard Nixon in April 1994 and continue to this day.
The book brings together 171 of the best essays on a wide range of topics. The chapter titles include things like:
- How Washington Works and Doesn’t
- Vote For…. Never Mind
- The Best Politicians Money Can Buy
- Hail To The Chief
- Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of News
- War And Peace
- Seasons
- Who We Are
- Human Interests
- The Lives We Led
- The Unthinkable
- Heroes
Each chapter includes a variety of commentaries, some of which I agreed with and some of which I completely disagreed with. I think that is the best thing about Schieffer, he has the ability to write on a wide political spectrum and always maintain his tact and style.
Of all the journalists working today, Schieffer the is one I have perhaps the greatest respect for, largely because he seems like such a class act.
So if you’re looking for some fall reading, I highly commend this to you all.
