As we head into 2009 (the International Astronomical Year) I am going to try and keep my fellow skywatchers updated on some of the more interesting astronomical events of the year. While weather many not always cooperate there are some fun things in the skies for the coming year.
Our first event actually takes us through the end of 2008 as we get to experience a rare conjunction of the Moon, two planets (Jupiter and Venus) and a bright star (Capricornus) all lined up in a row.
The start of 2009 brings us the Quadrantids meteor shower which should bring quite a show to those lucky enough to have clear skies and reasonably comfortable temperatures (IE above -20 or better). The best time for this show is expected to be Jan 3rd-5th.
Although I plan to update through the rest of the year, just for your advance plannng we have six eclipses (two solar and four lunar) set for 2009 as well. Unfortunately most of these events will not be visible in North America, but since we do have some international readers I wanted you all to be ready.
