A CBS poll shows that Americans support John Edwards’ decision not to withdraw from the race for president / the democratic nomination:
57% of those who were surveyed said Edwards is doing the right thing by continuing to campaign. Less than half as many — 24% — said he should have suspended his campaign or withdrawn entirely.
“Two-thirds of Democratic voters polled said he made the right decision.”
Those who watched the “60 Minutes” interview as well as those who did not watch said they support Edwards’ decision. Among those surveyed, the more closely Americans were following this story, the more supportive they were of Edwards continuing his campaign.
So far the good news:
But winning the nomination could be more difficult, according to the survey. While almost half of those surveyed think the chances of Edwards being the Democratic nominee are not affected by Elizabeth Edwards’ health issues, 28% of all respondents and 30% of Democratic primary voters think it makes it less likely.
Also interesting: CBS’ poll still has Hillary in the lead, with 36%, but Obama is truly closing the gap: 28% of Democratic voters say that they support him.
Only 8% left.
Will Obama catch up with Hillary? And what happens is Edwards will, as many people fear, be forced to withdraw from the race? 18% of Democratic voters support John Edwards. I can imagine that many of Edwards’ supporters aren’t too fond of Hillary.
Back to Edwards: it is good to see that the majority of Americans support his, well their, decision.
