ACORN Cracked And Roasted?

I had a couple of family members work for ACORN several years ago. They both went door-to-door, made signs, etc. But they quit after a year due to “shadiness”. Both of them said there were many good people working for ACORN but there always seemed to be some secrets among the local leadership and special sub-organizations that did weird “things”. I never really followed up on that since honestly I didn’t care much about ACORN. In my black nationalist days, I just viewed ACORN as a “tool of the man trying to keep black folks dazed and confused” (wasn’t I cute?). But now it seems now that ACORN has been “cracked” and is being “roasted”. Via the Wall Street Journal:

Acorn Runs Off the Rails
‘We’re just community organizers, just like the president used to be.’

On Monday, the U.S. Senate voted 83-7 to strip Acorn, the premier community organizing group on the left, of more than $1.6 million in federal housing money meant to assist low-income people obtain loans and prepare tax forms. This dramatic step followed last Friday’s decision by the U.S. Census Bureau to sever its ties with the organization, one of several community groups it was partnering with to conduct the nation’s head count.

Both of these actions came after secretly recorded videos involving employees in Acorn’s Brooklyn, N.Y., Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Md. and San Bernardino, Calif. offices were televised on Fox News. The videos were recorded by two independent filmmakers who posed as a prostitute and a pimp and said they were planning to import underage women from El Salvador for the sex trade. They asked for and received advice on getting a housing loan and evading federal taxes.

In response, Acorn has so far fired four of the employees seen on the videos. But it claimed the videos were “doctored” and accused critics of a smear campaign and “racist coverage” of the incidents.

Such rhetoric in the past has deflected scrutiny of Acorn tactics, such as street demonstrations and boycotts against banks to force lower credit standards for home loans, which a congressional report found contributed to the subprime loan mess. But now Acorn may be finally running off the rails.

UPDATE: ACORN organizer rips video
By Andrew Edwards

SAN BERNARDINO – The head organizer for California ACORN says a new video that appears to show a staffer at the organization’s San Bernardino office is fake journalism.

The video, which was posted shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday on a Web site called Big, shows a female ACORN employee talking to a man who claims to be a pimp interested in establishing a brothel where underage immigrant prostitutes would turn tricks in order to raise money for political activity.

The woman, identified on the video as Tresa Kaelke, appears on posted footage to be interested in cooperating the plan. However, California ACORN head organizer Amy Schur said the video is a gross misrepresentation of what actually happened.

“In this video, there are two actors who come into our office and who were messing with us. And our employee was messing with them,” Schur said.

She said that the complete and unedited video needs to be released to the public.

Schur said that in a moment not shown on the edited video, Kaelke asked the undercover “pimp” if he was joking and then proceeded to play along with the joke.

Please read the FULL ARTICLE. As expected, conservative bloggers are all over this story via Memeorandum. I would be a fool to tell them not to. ACORN is a favored foe of conservatives and regardless if the video is fake, ACORN is under the fire. I’m going to follow the Senate’s lead here and say that ACORN should be stripped of federal funding. And I feel President Obama should rebuke ACORN as well. Uh oh! I can feel it. The inevitable:

1. Where were you during the Bush Adminstration?
2. What about conservatives and there shadiness?

My answer to both questions is this: President Obama is the POTUS and Democrats control the House and Senate. They are the power base now. And ACORN helps Democrats. So Democrats should but the hammer down on them to show that they won’t tolerate this type of shadiness. I am not “living in a pastime paradise… glorifying days long gone behind” (thanks Stevie Wonder for the lyrics) regarding the fight against Dubya. That wagon has rolled through town. How about Democrats seting an example? I know it’s tough since ACORN has added much value (take that how you want) to many of Democratic Party campaign. But sometimes you have to bite the bullet and keep on rolling. The party would be better for it.

i’m not sure how authentic this one is, but there are numbers on it with which one can check…

not me, of course. i’m too lazy.

however, a lot of people on the right have been frothing mad with rage by the mere mention of ACORN since the election. given that, fox news, the expedient propagation of the complete BS number of “2 million” at the teabagger party in DC… frankly i just won’t be believing any allegation against ACORN. and a lot of it could be true because people are digging now. but considering who’s doing the digging, i’m not going to waste my time thinking about it. i fully expect complete fabrications.

I believe it could be fake because this “expose`” was done by the “Heritage Foundation”.

The Heritage Foundation are notorious right wing whackos masquerading as patriots.

  • PWT

dmf and Father_Time, how did you manage to read the post with your heads buried so deep in……the sand?

  • troosvelt_1858

I think John Stewart got it right

As to those who try to defend people who didn’t blink at the idea of importing underage girls for prostitution slavery, well I don’t really know where those folks are coming from

  • tidbits

ACORN’s excuse is that they were playing along with a joke. Setting up underage prostitution rings and promoting international slavery to accomplish it? Not funny. Someone explain how this is a joke to be gone along with…please. ACORN spends its time “joking” about rape? That’s their excuse?

Make no mistake. Sexual slavery is rape, complete with all the ramifications. Not a joking matter in my view. This “excuse” does not impress me.

    Just to be a jerk, this whole ACORN episode puts Neal Boortz’s comment the other day in an entirely different light. If you remember;

Hate radio host Neal Boortz used his Twitter account this morning to compare the President’s visit to Wall Street to “sending a child molester to speak to a kindergarten class“

Mr. Obama is a product of ACORN, ACORN supports sexual slavery and rape; ergo…..Neal hit the nail on the head.

First, ACORN deserves everything they get from these incidents.

Second, Obama is not a “product of ACORN”. This is a lie, plain and simple.

Second, Obama is not a “product of ACORN”. This is a lie, plain and simple.

Yeah, maybe a fellow traveler or a useful idiot, but never “a product of ACORN.” Whew, wake up and smell the corruption.

@@Second, Obama is not a “product of ACORN”. This is a lie, plain and [email protected]@

I agree with that……because the teacher is not logically the “product” of the students. I agree the more correct statement is that ACORN is a product of Obama.

An article in the journal Social Policy entitled, “Case Study: Chicago — The Barack Obama Campaign,” by Toni Foulkes, a Chicago Acorn leader and a member of Acorn’s National Association Board. The odd thing about this article is that Foulkes is forced to protect the technically “non-partisan” status of Acorn’s get-out-the-vote campaigns, even as he does everything in his power to give Acorn credit for helping its favorite son win the critical 2004 primary that secured Obama the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate.

While most press accounts imply that Obama just happened to be at the sort of public-interest law firm that would take Acorn’s “motor voter” case, Foulkes claims that Acorn specifically sought out Obama’s representation in the motor voter case, remembering Obama from the days when he worked with Talbot. And while many reports speak of Obama’s post-law school role organizing “Project VOTE” in 1992, Foulkes makes it clear that this project was undertaken in direct partnership with Acorn. Foulkes then stresses Obama’s yearly service as a key figure in Acorn’s leadership-training seminars.

At least a few news reports have briefly mentioned Obama’s role in training Acorn’s leaders, but none that I know of have said what Foulkes reports next: that Obama’s long service with Acorn led many members to serve as the volunteers in Obama’s early political campaigns — his initial 1996 State Senate campaign, and his failed bid for Congress in 2000 (Foulkes confuses the dates of these two campaigns.) With Obama having personally helped train a new cadre of Chicago Acorn leaders, by the time of Obama’s 2004 U.S. Senate campaign, Obama and Acorn were “old friends,” says Foulkes.

  • ACORN has been around since 1970, when President Obama was 9 years old. So ACORN is not the product of Obama. President Obama’s influence in Chicago ACORN looks to be strong. So I can roll a little with “Chicago ACORN is the product of Obama” but even that is weak since Chicago ACORN was started not long after 1970. So how about deep-sixing all the “Obama is ACORN/ACORN is Obama” and deal with a true fact:President Obama had substantial campaign help (like many Democrats) from ACORN.That being said, it would be in the Democrats best interest to join Republicans in ending federal money to ACORN. It does not play well to defend ACORN when they are shooting themselves in both feet as the days by. I don’t have to demonize (aka “making up crap to stir the partisan pot”) President Obama regarding the ACORN situation. That game is worn out and the points scored mean nothing but further partisan entrenchment. The facts coming out about ACORN speak for themselves. Do the proper thing Mr. President and Congressional Democrats.

First, ACORN deserves everything they get from these incidents.Second, Obama is not a “product of ACORN”. This is a lie, plain and simple.

I agree with Jim here, and I commend him on his condemnation of ACORN.As for Obama, just because he associated with ACORN doesn’t mean he subscribes to their practices in these offices. I don’t for a second believe that he does. The only thing he is guilty of is an association with a questionable group, and promoting that this group be federally funded and part of the Census effort. I think it is clear that this was a bad policy and he should have vetted the organization more completely beforehand, but thats not the same as him approving of its actions. Trying to associate them directly is like trying to associate a conservative leader with a few radicals who send him a campaign donation. For example, McCain getting a donation from Jerry Falwell and speaking at his university did not make him a religious right member.

As for ACORN they are roasted and their credibility has now been destroyed on all ends of the political spectrum. Only 7 Senators supported them.

    BTW the shameless 7 are:

    Dick Durbin (D-IL)
    Roland Burris (D-IL)
    Robert Casey (D-PA)
    Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
    Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
    Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
    Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Not surprised by any of the names there except for Bernie Sanders who I generally respect (Zero earmarks), although I have to take him down a notch for this vote.

Hopefully they’re doomed — Census is divorcing them, and they need to be divorced from much more, including freedom (and into “corrective” custody instead), in a number of instances. Even now they cannot be trusted.

Of course, to attack the long-known-to-be-crooked-and-worse ACORN is what else these days? “Racist,” et cetera.
