As we have seen quite frequently over the past few years, sports and politics frequently collide, particularly when it involves a global sporting event. Weeks ago, the tiny Gulf nation of Qatar, despite the best efforts of Britain and in this case, the United States, was awarded the right to host the 2022 World Cup. According to columnist Anas Zahid of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Madina, President Obama’s comments and behavior after the announcement are indicative of the high-handed and insulting manner with which America has become accustomed to treating the rest of the world.
For Al-Madina, Anas Zahid writes in part:
By failing to hasten to congratulate his competition in the spirit of good sportsmanship – after all, the World Cup is more than anything a sports competition – President Obama abandoned the civilized behavior expected of him on such occasions, as befits a president of a republic and a great nation like the United States. And the American president (the loser) didn’t stop there. He nervously fled the press conference in front of the eyes and ears of the world; only to announce that awarding Qatar the honor of hosting the 2022 World Cup was the “wrong decision”! Why is it wrong, Mr. Obama? How is it possible for you to oversee so much without having had access to Qatar’s bid?
It’s a wrong decision and that’s all there is to it! … I’m the president of the United States, so you must accept everything I say! I’m the inspired president of the country that fights for the greater good and eradicates evil from the world.
This American cowboy doesn’t know a thing about sports or the spirit of good sportsmanship. This cowboy knows how to play one game and one game only – and that’s the game of death.
