A 7.0 earthquake has struck and reportedly ‘shattered’ the capital city of Haiti and the surrounding region.
Reports indicate that parts of the Presidential residence have collapsed along with many other buildings.
With millions living on the impoverished island the death toll could be horrible.

You can also check out reports on USGS quake site which shows just how many people felt very violent shaking.
omg how utterly horrible. As if the Haitians didn't have enough trouble already. A 7.0 — yikes!
This is in our own back yard; I hope we as a nation will be exceptionally generous and help in any way we can. Prayers, thoughts, and most tangibly money on the way to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
Hospital collapse, in Petionville — ugh
This looks bad. Get the relief money going right now. Probably start with $400 million till an assessment can be made. Air Force and Navy start moving.
“Get the relief money going right now [...] Air Force and Navy start moving”
Haiti and the earthquake vs. New Orleans (and other Gulf Coast sites) and Hurricane Katrina –
1. If Obama and the Dems move first, GOP will say they bungled the stimulus and still neglect the USA.
2. If the GOP moves first, or criticizes the Dems for not doing enough, fast enough, Katrina gets revisited.
3. Either way, New Orleans people will probably be touchy about this (more precisely, about the politics).
That's just my guess. I don't consult Fox News, but that's what I would expect, eventually, in comments.
imho can the politics, get the aid down there asap, and sort out the counting of coups later. I went through a couple of 6 point somethings and on a logrhythmic scale I barely imagine a 7 but it must be horrible. Collapsed hospital to boot.
yeah, I don't mind paying taxes for natural disaster relief — those are literally beyond anyone's control. And I'm sure plenty of private relief groups are mobilizing as we speak.
But your right DLS, wherever there is hay to be made someone will be making it. It is in our nature.
I don't want to see it politicized, but I suspect it may be. We can already predict how it may be…
Incidentally,
“Air Force and Navy start moving”
Don't forget the Army. Chinooks — just as in Pakistan:

The Navy and Air force have helicopters.
According the Red Cross web site, they've released $200,000 to get started, and they've got a chapter over there, but that's probably not going to get them too far.
The HQ for the Red Cross is not in America. The American Red Cross “society” is only a national “chapter” of the Federation of the Red Cross “Societies” or the red cross movement based in Switzerland.
It will be interesting to follow what “donor” countries donate how much money to the relief efforts of this terrible natural disaster. Follow both UN and the Federation of the Red Cross, which and how many NGOs respond, whom is calling for volunteers. Considering our economic crisis, I certainly hope some other nations step up to help this time, (remembering the 2004 tsunami).
