Spiral Light Show. What the heck was it? UPDATE: Solved

(See update below)
Over the skies of Norway, something was happening besides the President’s arrival to pick up his Nobel prize. A truly strange light show took place which absolutely does not look like any permutation of the Northern Lights that I’ve ever seen. It went on for at least ten minutes, twisting in outward moving spirals with some sort of strange blue-green beam coming out of the center. I have to agree with Allahpundit… in terms of “freaky” this may be the “freaky deakyest” to come round in my lifetime. Here is a still shot and a collection of videos taken of the event for you to check out.

Spiral.JPG

What could this be? As I said, the Northern Lights seems a very unlikely explanation. Others are saying it was a rocket test by the Russians gone astray. But that’s an awfully neat, circular spiral for an errant missile and it lasted a long time. And where was the rocket? Is it possible that this wasn’t happening in our atmosphere at all, but instead was some sort of supernova type event far out in the universe which simply looked as if it were close by through optical tricks of the atmosphere? You tell me. I certainly don’t have any answers for you. But it was definitely weird like something right out of a sci-fi film.

UPDATE: Mystery solved. As some already predicted in the comments section, the Russians have fessed up and it was a sub launched missile test which underwent a catastrophic failure of the third stage. Who would have guessed it could produce such a spectacular light?

I agree with your last opinion. The rocket theory sounds like a cover up, aslo if It is the Russians testing a nuclear rocket that pisses me off and the world needs to do something before we have another cold-war.. But yah I think it was something going on in space :) I hope so

I didn't put this in the main article because I obviously have absolutely zero evidence or professional scientific background to support it, but you know what it looked like to me? The first thing that came to my mind was that it looks like what I imagine the initial formation of a black hole would look like if a star someplace out in our galaxy collapsed into one without the huge supernova which we generally assume precedes such an event. Like if a fairly massive star near the end of its life just collapsed into a smallish, single stellar mass black hole with the dust field around it beginning to spiral down into the event horizon. But as I said, see the disclaimers above. I have no expertise to base that on.

Very cool — and very pretty, too!

So nobody's going with the “aliens putting up something pretty for us”?

  5. onassas says:

It was the third stage of a Russian Buluva (spelling) missile. It was obviously a failed attempt. This has happened before over Norway. It's more fun to speculate however.

  6. adwilliams1987 says:

If it were something in space, wouldn't it have been seen from more places than just on the northern tip of Norway?

  7. Father_Time says:

Looks like a projection of light or energy of some sort. Maybe it was planned for President Obama's visit. Any civil aviation published warnings before the event by Norway's civil aviation authority? Russian aviation authority?

  8. Silhouette says:

Towards the end it looked as if this wormhole like apparation was coming from a lighted area on the ground and snaking up into the sky, ending in a black hole towards the end of the spiral cycle. That was the most disconcerting appearance. It appeard as a vortex and then morphed into a sky blocking black shape not unlike a hole.

We really don't understand the universe. If you can say nothing else about me you can say that I am THE proponent of not messing around with something potentially harmful until EVERY aspect of it is fully understood. And even then go back and revisit your notes..

    Wow! How totally-crazy-unreal-awesome!

    LOL

  11. jimbobuk says:

Could it be connected with the Hadron Collider or was it a worm hole opening up to allow an intergalactic visitor to see Obama collect this Nobel Peace Prize?

    You tell me?

  12. Jazz says:

Post updated. It was indeed a Russian missile, or so they are saying. Beats me how any rocket engine produces a light show like that, though, with that much symetry.

I myself, am a complete amature scientistcosmoligist. There are many strange things on this earth and in the universe, especially taking into account quantum physics. I am reasonablely sure that the celestial body was created by a sentient being. This rules out “Supernovas”, “Natural balck holes” and “The Weather”. Which means man made or alien. Q: Do I think this was a missileRocket? A:No. I state this as a definate answer for several reasons. 1. Too long to be a rouge missilerocket. 2: These devices, when in err, are DETONATED. This (for those of you who belive the media cover story) would imply a big flash of white light in the sky, as opposed to the “Black Hole”. There would also be debree immidiately visable falling WHITE HOT against the black night sky. There was no evidence of this.
Q: Do I think it was Alien?
A: Unlikely. However scientists have confessed QUOTE “We have no idea what it is. We have never seen anything like it”. If it is Alien, then we are about to be colonised, or advanced, or go to war. I DO find it strange how Barrak Obama has recieved a Nobel Peace Prize for apparently nothing, and is infact in OSLO Tommorrow. This coupled with the UN's ceasing of UFO investigations two weeks ago and rumours (Look you WILL find them) concerning the President and a Disclosure of UFO contact to the general public. I Conceed that the Alien side of things does hinge on Rumour and Coincidence, like Onassas said; “Its fun to speculate”.
    Finally:
Q: What the Heck was it?
A: My honest theory point to the LHC. This is the only piece of technology that I am aware of, capable of : CREATING BLACK HOLES, which during there formation BENDTRAPWARP Light.
When a black hole is created its singularity feeds on nearby matter crating a spiral, after the “hole” has consumed enough mass, it will collapse in on itself (note the huge and rapid expansion of the singularity) and gain what is called an “event horizon” which is A BLACK DISC SURROUNDED BY A WHIT OUTER RING. As this was only supposed to be a moments comment, you can read about black holes from a variety of sources.
IF it was a black hole, then I do not understand where it went, but then that comes down to two things 1: My own understanding of the UNIVERSE and “Mankinds” BEST GUESS. 2 What peice fo technology (that I am aware of) could DO that?
So To summarise, I think the people manipulating the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have dropped a bollock, and are probably shitting themselves as they nearly ripped apart the planet last night. Afraid to scare the public, and admit that we may have reached an impass of human exploration and discovery, they would rather save the face of the investors, bankers and politicians and blame it on a wanky rocket.
I may, of course be wrong. Thank you for reading.

  14. chandlerbrujo says:

I find it of great coincidence that the LHC recorded protons colliding at 1.18 trillion electron volts last night…..setting a new world record for beam energy……i don't know, but it could have something to do with the lights, although, the LHC is some way from Norway.

  15. asheslister says:

except people dont live much farther north- and it was seen in northern russia (to their north) as well. where exactly is the missle, and if it was spiraling and blew up- the blast would mess up the spiral seeing as it was at the bottom of a loop when it ended, and the “dust” or light would have been blown into the black absent spot in the middle up from the missle. i like the black whole/ star theory, they just dont want us scared our planet will pixilize into a whole of nothing with all the 2012 hooplah going about, and they dont know so they tell us what we want to hear. we dont even know how deep in our atmospere it was, and how did a missle make a blue beam shine down onto the earth? man cannot make light bend midair- we can only make solid beams. we cant arc or widen a beam halfway through or cause a straight beam to fan out at a certain point. man didnt do that….

  16. ebonfyre says:

When you look at the still pictures it looks like an amazing light phenomenon, especially the blue beam, and I didn't want to buy the stray rocket theory either. But when you watch the video you see that it's not just a steady light in the sky but a fairly quickly spiraling point producing a trail exactly like many of the hobby rockets I have launched when looked at from directly below the launch. The glow is admittedly an eerie effect, but I think plausibly can be explained by light reflecting off of the ever-widening particulate emissions – especially if it was a multistage rocket with different fuels which might produce the different refracted colors seen right as the pattern changes (from the beam-looking stage to the spiral stage). I'm not going to pretend to know any more than any one of you posting – we are all just speculating – but the missile theory is not only plausible but likely in my opinion.

And PLEASE stop the ridiculous fear-mongering linking this to the LHC. There are some legitimate dangers associated with a project of that magnitude, but spooky lights in the sky are not one of them.

  17. roro80 says:

Just so that no one needs to go on in fear that this was created by “aliens” or something otherworldly, both patterns can be explained pretty easily. That they happen to line up is quite rare (obviously), and spectacularly lovely, in my opinion.

The blue bit looks to be a fluid flow pattern called a Karman vortex street. Basically all you need to do to get one of these is have fluid flowing at a particular speed around a particularly sized object (the speed and size are dependent upon fluid properties like viscosity as well as each other). Here's an example of cigarette smoke that looks much like the blue pattern we see: http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/~cfd/gallery/i…

The large white spiral looks to be light interference patterns; the interference of light waves is a well-known and easily reproducable effect. Here's an example of a spiral created by light interference: http://focus.aps.org/files/focus/v9/st29/pic-v9…

    Cool, huh?

It was certainly NOT a Russian missle! Thats a cover up story!! This happened the night before Obama was to give his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in Norway! Wake up people! Jesus is coming, but someone very, very evil will preceed him!

    You are wacked.

  21. lisa7188 says:

Whats whacked is what was in the sky! Thats no rocket! Its a celestial sign. Joel 2:30 “And I will show signs and wonders in the heavens……” In the end you'll see that God is true, and every man a liar!
