Sanford Facing Impeachment

It looks like (thankfully) that South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is soon to be out of a job.

Legislators are working on impeachment of the slimeball.

It's about time they nailed some of those Reps like Sanford, and possibly Bruno in NY.
  • I am glad to have them get crooks period, party has nothing to do with it for me.
  • Leonidas
I don't mind them going after him for misappropriation of public funs for his trip, but thats pocket change compared to some other political figures still in office.

The affair itself is no reason for impeachment, I defended Bill Clinton against my fellow Republicans regarding a similar matter, saying that impeachment was silly as well.

Be interesting to see the names of the liberals who will be supporting this impeachment who defended Clinton, and Republicans who went after Clinton but defend Sanford. The line of hypocrites will likely be quite long.

Question for all those who have posted and will post on this, "What was your view of the Clinton impeachment?, justified or not? should he have been removed from office?"
  • Just to start the ball rolling

I opposed the Clinton impeachment, much to the dismay of some of my more conservative friends.

I support the Sanford impeachment because it involves both crimes and conduct in office.
  • GeorgeSorwell
    I agree with Leonidas.

    I don't blame Sanford's wife for leaving him. He's a self-absorbed hypocrite.

Sanford's outrageous hypocrisy in his personal life doesn't have all that much to do with his job as governor. They only launched a criminal investigation because of his adultery.

His personal life shouldn't be criminalized.

Religious leaders should be removed for immorality.
Political leaders should be removed for flagrant abuse of the power of their office. Of course, that would still remove most of our politicians.

Gee, Mr. "Steadfast Against the Stimulus" is no longer a possibility for 2012, is he? [sad look]

    Impeach him.
  • dduck12
And that other crooked Rep., Bruno is on trial.

Way to bring up false equivalencies. Or maybe you just didn't click through to see that he's being accused of 37 separate ethics charges? None of them is "committed adultery". It's quite probable that when his affair and the circumstances surrounding the affair came to light, that's when his ethics violations came out. It also makes the public feel less bad about throwing him under the bus while others get away with huge ethics breaches. However, the affair itself is not what is driving this process.

It remains to be seen whether the 37 crimes can be proven and are deemed serious enough to actually get the guy out of office, but that's why there are trials and hearings involved.

Here is the 37 ethics charges. Not one mention of BJ or adultery.
    37 ethics charges

The S.C. Ethics Commission charged Sanford with breaking 37 state ethics laws. The charges, released Monday, allege:

    - 18 instances in which Sanford flew first- or business class - in violation of state law, which requires an urgent reason to use a pricey ticket.

    - 10 occasions in which Sanford used almost $3,000 in campaign money to pay for personal expenses, which is barred by state law.

    - 9 instances in which Sanford or family members used state aircraft for personal travel, which is barred by law.
  • Leonidas
Did any of the charges involve lying under oath?

Oh I agree he should be investigated and any financial penalties extracted from him, just not removed from office for this. If we can have Geitner and Charlie Rangel get off for his tax evasion and hold office, I don't see why this should be used as justification to remove Sanford. Slap him on the wrist, make him pay the money back with penalty if indeed guilty, and be done with it.

This is really all about the affair, the rest is just a side item.

Now if folks want to remove people from office for such misconduct, I can go along with that, but clear out everyone. including Geitner, Rangel, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd, and all the rest of both partis who have ethics infractions, or if not proven yet impeach them and put em on trial. If you wont go after them all, don't make big issues over minor league items.

Maybe start here if you want to clean house

This is really about the affair, and the infighting between Sanford and Andre Bauer the GOP LT. Governor, all the rest is a side item. Bauer wants the social conservative wing of the State party to have more clout and Sanford stands in his way. This Lt. Governor wanted the State to have stained glass looking license plates on our cars with a cross and the motto "I believe". Sanford is from the fiscally Conservative wing of the Party. Democrats have no chance of taking control of government here in SC, so the GOP wings are free to infight.

The Clinton's have their version of marriage. Did Clenis use AF1 and disappear for days for some tail? Did Chelsea fly first class or use AF1 to go to a Dead show or shopping? Yes, Clenis lied in a civil suit about an affair, but your fellow CDS crowd even thought they killed Foster over an affair or something...

The SC GOP is hanging Sanford, not some netroots or rabid partisan Democrats.

    1. [rekindling my thoughts from when I was in Upstate New York]

    "Bruno is on trial"

Is anything unfortunately happening also to another notorious New Yorker, Sheldon Silver?

    2. Sanford -- probably has lost his chance to seek the Presidency. But if he tries a salvage job, might he recover to the point of being suitable "filler" to stuff into the Vice Presidential candidacy?
