Gideon Levy: Stop Giving Israel Everything for Nothing

There are a few strong voices in Israel’s media who are willing to call out Israel’s intransigence on issues related to the peace process for what it is — the self-destructive behavior of an arrogant spoiled bully convinced that consequences are for someone else. How did Israel’s leaders develop such an entitlement mentality? Levy’s answer: Washington, D.C.:

Now is the time to say to the United States: Enough flattery. If you don’t change the tone, nothing will change. As long as Israel feels the United States is in its pocket, and that America’s automatic veto will save it from condemnations and sanctions, that it will receive massive aid unconditionally, and that it can continue waging punitive, lethal campaigns without a word from Washington, killing, destroying and imprisoning without the world’s policeman making a sound, it will continue in its ways.

"How did Israel’s leaders develop such an entitlement mentality? "

They must have been trained by American liberals.
    LOL
  • I saw your reply coming from 100 miles away, JD... LOL!

I have decided not to have much of an opinion on the Israel/Palestine situation. Because I feel like a blind-folded boxer flailing away at non-existent opponent. In other words, I'm confused. I see all the emotion on both sides. And it's so thick that it feels like an impenetrable shield. I can only say:

Can't we all just get along??

    LOL
Actually it was the neocons and if you didn't know that you haven't been paying attention... LOL

Thank you, Steve. You saved me the trouble.

Of course it is the Conservatives, specifically republicans, that are the American political supporters of Israel. I think it is because they buy weapons from our military industrial complex. Even though Israel has been, and maybe is now but I haven't checked, our largest foreign budget thus our customers are also our welfare dependants.

It’s funny how Conservatives do not complain about our tax money being given away to Israel, but complain about it given away to our own people. I don’t mind supporting Israel against the crazy, backward, unrepentant, self destructive, religiously motivated murderous Arab of whom are sworn to kill all Jews, I just want American Conservatives to realize that Americans are worthy of helping, educating, worthy of healthcare, and generally worth saving also.

    It’s a fair desire IMO.

I think I just beat you to that one, Tyrone.

I did not, however, expect the liberals (SteveK and Father_Time, etc) to actually state that an "entitlement mentality" comes from neo-cons or Republicans. Wow.

As far as Israel goes, I'm not the biggest fan. I personally do not think that we had the right to force Israeli statehood upon a sovereign state that already existed - Palestine. That was wrong. Apparently, the majority of the world feels the same on that one - it's what fuels terrorist activity to this day.

Of course, now I'll be labeled an "anti-semite" for not backing Israeli sovereignty; just like I was branded a racist for not voting for Obama. I am neither and have logical reasons for both decisions.

Hey FT.... I'm a conservative and actually do not support tax money to foreign states as aid. I also stand against the Healthcare takeover and other government incursions into matters in which they do not belong. The Constitution already laid out that framework - we just refuse to follow it.

And for the record. If someone were to come into my country and tell me it's now THEIRS because the United Nations said so - I'd be a little ticked off too. I'd be up in arms about it. I would hope that you would too. Don't blame the Palestinians for feeling the same way. Terrorist acts are unacceptable - but no one would listen to them in the UN when they tried to make their point.
