The Unvarnished Racism of Pat Buchanan

Firedoglake’s Scarecrow blasts Pat Buchanan for his racist diatribes on MSNBC, and asks why that network continues to hire him as an on-air contributor:

Pat Buchanan is a racist, white supremacist intent on stoking racial hatred. There has never been any doubt of this, and throughout the confirmation process of Judge Sotomayor, he has repeated his unvarnished white supremacist views at every opportunity.

This is not about his anger at affirmative action, a policy that seeks to rectify past, persistent and continuing patterns of racial discrimination. You either agree on the need for this rebalancing or you don’t.

No, Buchanan’s argument is different, because he believes that non-whites are, as a matter of sheer, unadulterated prejudice, not entitled to equal treatment. He made that clear last night in this exchange with Rachel Maddow.

He starts with the opinion that Sotomayor is not qualified and that Obama’s choice of her was “affirmative action,” just as the promotion of other non-whites could only have occurred, which he sees as “reverse discrimination against white males.” Apparently, there are no qualified non-whites. But then this exchange occurs:

Maddow: Why do you think it is that of 110 Supreme Court Justices we’ve had in this country, 108 of them have been white?

Buchanan: Well, I think that white men were 100 percent of the people who wrote the Constitution, 100 percent of the people who wrote the Declaration of Independence, 100 percent of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close to 100 percent of the people who died at Normandy.

This is been a country built basically by white folks in this country who were 90 percent of the nation in 1960 when I was growing up, and about 10 percent were African Americans who had been discriminated against.

It’s hard to find a clearer statement of white supremacist racism, even though Buchanan tries to argue he only wants “the finest minds you can get” on the Supreme Court.

Even if you ignore the historical revisions, the willful ignorance of the huge contributions made by everyone, the obtuse failure to mention hundreds of years of slavery, another hundred years of lynchings and Jim Crow, and the continuing demonization of non-whites/Hispanics as unAmerican or “illegal aliens,” his core message is that white men are entitled to hold political power in America, and white men should be angry if anyone else wants a piece of that.

And whether you see him actually believing this dangerous nonsense or cynically stoking and exploiting the anger of others who do, there’s no doubt he’s exploiting his privileged MSNBC perch to stir up racial hatred. He’s said he means to do that.

  1. Gee…who better than Pat to reinforce the liberal idea that every conservative is a racist?

Gee…why do you think Fox has Colmes???

    This isn't rocket science.

  2. “It’s hard to find a clearer statement of white supremacist racism”

Well, technically, it's quite easy to find much clearer statemnets of white supremacist racism…but you have to look to previous statements by Pat himself.

  3. THERE'S REALLY NO POINT IN ARGUING ABOUT 'RACISM' AND 'DISCRIMINATION' AND ALL THAT. THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED BY WHITE EUROPEANS. NOW THAT COUNTRY IS BEING DESTROYED BY OTHER RACES AND CULTURES. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ENACTED LAWS MAKING IT ILLEGAL FOR THE WHITE MAJORITY TO HANG ONTO THEIR OWN COUNTRY. THE COUNTRY WILL DISAPPEAR INTO THE THIRD WORLD. WHEN THE COUNTRY IS TOTALLY DESTROYED AND CIVILIZATION WITH IT, THAT WILL BE CALLED 'WHITE RACISM' AND BE CONSIDERED A CRIME ON THE PART OF AN EXTINCT RACE AND CULTURE. END OF STORY. AND END OF HISTORY.

  4. Ya might want'ta think about gettin that other oar in the water matey!

  5. you hit it JSpencer, on both counts.

re Buchy, I think he and his sister have both bounced back from the failed bid, but /and I think also in some ways, not. I didn't realize the vote was so Tancredo-ish. Thanks J.

  6. Lee Larson— We stole the country from its native inhabitants and imported black slaves to build our empire. Hardly sounds civilized to me.

  7. BTW, I wonder if Pat Buchanan would say the same about that other “affirmative action” pick, Clarence Thomas!

  8. Well said JSpencer… archangel… & kritt11.
The only thing I can add to your comments is: HEY… LEE LARSON THE CAPS LOCK KEY IS BETWEEN TAB KEY AND SHIFT KEY… LOSE 'EM!

  9. shout much?

  10. TO KRITT 11 AND OTHERS WHO INTERPRET PROGRESS IN TERMS OF THEIR OWN POLITICALLY-CORRECT (AND SELF-RIGHTEOUS) SELF-DESTRUCTION, I'VE ALREADY SPELLED IT ALL OUT FOR YOU. AS FOR THE SLAVES, THEY HAVE PULLED THE PLOW AS ANY DRAUGHT ANIMAL WOULD. AS FOR THE INDIANS, THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN ANYTHING MORE THAN STONES IN THE FIELD TO BE PLOWED OR THE ROAD TO BE PAVED. THIS IS MY FINAL ENTRY. ##THINK ABOUT THAT AS YOU MAKE YOUR OWN FINAL ENTRY. AND YOUR OWN EXIT. FAREWELL.

  11. Kudos to LeeLarson, for in screaming CAPS, frankly and candidly speaking out for all that is and all who are racists in oiur great country.

  12. Hey LeeLarson- the white Europeans who first settled this country saved capital letters for only certain words, and they would no doubt be disgusted with your clunky attempts at logical English prose. As for the stones in the field and the beasts of burden you mention, I could make a list off the top of my head 20 names long of non white writers and thinkers who would make your robot writing look pathetic. Non whites, kicking your ass in your native tongue. Aren't you ashamed? I think you are, clinging to race as a reason to be better than them, when, inside, you know you've got nothing.

  13. Lee Larsen

Uh- America is a melting pot — a place for opportunity for the oppressed- or did I read the inscription wrong on the Statue of Liberty? White Europeans may have founded this country–but that is because they denied rights of ownership to those of other races. They have no inalienable right to hold onto it. They CAN continue to contribute to our continued prosperity– or they can long for “the good old days” lol.

It may be PC, but its also true.

  14. As always, the leftist cabal of TMV lacks the capacity to understand what racism is. If they did, they could find it easily enough by looking in the mirror.

Racism, in its purist form, is the idea that there are genetically inferior groups of people.

As you will notice in the sentence above, it ends with a period. It doesn’t continue on to say that a racist needs to hate these genetically inferior people, just that one believes there is a difference. So, to expand on this simple truth, people who claim to love and want to help these different groups are just as “racist” as the KKK.

When you identify a group of people as needing special “help” to pass tests, enter college, get jobs, be appointed to office, etc., you are saying in effect that these people are not capable of attaining these things on their own because they are not as good as the preferred class. How condescending. How utterly arrogantly racist.

You talk of Pat Buchanan, who has never uttered a racist word in his life and ignore the breathtaking condescension of Barbara Boxer, who believes in her heart that blacks are to be taken care of, much like pets.

    Racism.

When you learn the meaning of the word (and when you finish apologizing to the people in your life you’ve been treating like fools because of the color of their skin) come back and we’ll talk.

  15. A pile of poop. jwest keeps serving up piles of poop. Plain and simple.

  16. 1556,

That’s a pretty complex and articulate argument you make – for a liberal.

  17. jwest
Sorry to say but thats a mighty silly straw man you just built. Saying “I want to help the asians, or I want to help the Latinos” I give you this would be racist. That is also pretty rare, usually you want to help inner city kids or a poor town or neighborhood. Just in case you have not been to those places a good deal of poor white people live in those there as well.

We do have people that want “to help the blacks” but these are also the same people that are the offspring of upper to upper middle class families that while young are liberal and as they get older turn conservative. They try to “teach those people” and when “those people” do not want to learn from a bigot dressed up in humanitarian clothing they get angry and decide all poor deserve to be poor so fuck'um. This is the description of a common state of mind but among a small percentage of the populace. Most people trying to “help” an area are not concentrated on a race but a community.

As for Pat he is racist just not what used to be considered racist. He has no problem using race baiting and inflaming racial tensions, then again few republicans since Nixon have, but always wants to stand back and say “I am not racist I am just proud to be white.” Funny the proud to be white thing was the new face of the KKK David Duke gave the media in the 1980's. Some do not consider it racist, some also do not think the southern strategy racist. I will continue despising those people and voting against everything they are about until they stop though.

Sadly I have always liked Pat, away from race he has some great things to say with some truly unique views many of which are very good ideas but they will never be heard. By his own fault, by his own words he has muted his voice to all that do not share some of his more extreme views or more extreme deals with the southern strategy devil. To be honest I dont think Pat is a bigot in his heart, I think he just plays one to stay in the limelight, I almost find that more disgusting. BY his words though he plays the classic post-1980 racist game though and therefore in my book he is a racist, kinda like all people to the left of Reagen are considered commies by him.

One last note is that without affirmative action we would still be living in the land of Jim Crow without the laws to enforce it. If you want someone to blame for the “evils” of affirmative action you should look to just about every white person in this country that did not fight racism up until the 1960's. It's their fault, they should have read the constitution and since they did not we have to play special favors to get this nation to live up to its ideals instead of talking out both sides of their mouth which is what we have a tendency of doing.

I am white, lower middle class and worked my entire life. I do not care about affirmative action, I care about a military industrial complex and US government that are giant piggy banks for the rich and their investments. That costs us a great deal more money and damages the nation much more.

  18. I'm a black guy and entitled to help. Can some one help me with my tomato plants? They seem to be producing small tomatoes only.

    heh heh heh…

  19. T,

You’re obviously a victim of the white devil slavemaster military industrial conspiracy to keep black folks from growing good tomatoes.

If you bring your tomatoes to the county fair, I’ll give you a blue ribbon even if they are 20% smaller than white farmer’s. As Barbara Boxer will attest, that wouldn’t be patronizing at all.

No one should expect inner-city tomatoes to be as big and juicy as rural tomatoes. It is the institutionalized oppression of the vines and the lack of proper role models that inhibit the young tomatoes from taking the proper paths to full maturity.

The only thing that is for sure is that some old, white republican is making a ton of money because you’re having problems growing tomatoes. ;)

  20. jwest — you're back on your “Pat is NOT a racist” kick, eh? Do I need go look up the quotes again? I will simply link to the last time you tried to argue that Pat isn't a racist (it was only a few weeks ago — how often this topic comes up!), because it's already been hashed out.

    http://themoderatevoice.com/36556/racism-first-

I think my favorite part of that conversation was when you said “What is inherently wrong with white rule of black majority?”

You can go ahead and make up your own, special, limited definition of the word “racism”, declare it as the one true and right definition, and then use that definition to try to prove that someone is or is not a racist — but when I see that sort of crap (or, ahem, “pile of poop”), I'm going to call it out.

  21. “What is inherently wrong with white rule of black majority?”

    Roro,

I see people. You see black and white. I judge people by their character and ability. You judge them by their skin color, accent, parentage, social class and politics.

You can’t imagine a situation where people would choose the best leader, regardless of skin color.

But still, in your mind, you see racism in others.

    (sigh)

  22. You're little “it's opposite day” game is so tired and juvenile. For those of you following along, the quote was in reference to Apartheid. The thing inherently wrong about white rule of black majority, of course, was that they were choosing the best leader, regarless of skin color, as long as that skin color was white. Again, this has been hashed out before.

  23. jwest,

So as soon the Emancipation Proclamation was signed black folks became equals and, since then, have had complete equal access to everything white folks do?

Also, what is your explanation for the fact that 1 in 4 black men will be put in jail in the US during their lives? Are black folks inherently more “criminal” than white people? Or is our justice system bent towards arresting more black people than white people?

I could continue with the questioning but I have a feeling you'll get lost after the first one. Being “color blind” does no justice for anyone. It simply is an easy way of avoiding history…or simply not understanding it.

  24. I can't get Pat's argument. Is he saying that since 100% of the people who penned down the constitution were white only they understand it and/or have the right to make decisions by it? I have never heard anything more stupid.

The constitution was written by white people only because they wouldn't allow anyone else at that time to share. I'm sure he would admit that was racist. To continue the trend is what? Justice because a Hispanic person can't understand the constitution? I think it's more of 'she can't touch white stuff' to me.

This guy should be hospitalized and have his brains checked. I live a non racist country Zambia and find it hard to believe this. Even Russia is not this bad.
