Alan Keyes Arrested at Notre Dame

Mars

Alan Keyes was one of 22 anti-abortion protesters who were arrested today on the campus of Notre Dame University:

Former Illinois U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes and 21 other protesters were arrested this morning when they refused to leave the Notre Dame campus during a protest of President Obama’s upcoming commencement address there, authorities said.

Keyes and the others were arrested on trespassing charges when they refused to leave campus, a university spokesman said. All 22 were being held in the St. Joseph County Jail on misdemeanor criminal trespass charges, in lieu of $250 bond each, said St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Redman.

Keyes was among a group of 26 [sic] protesters, some of them pushing baby carriages with dolls covered in fake blood, who entered the campus and were greeted by Notre Dame police, said university spokesman Dennis Brown.

The protesters had “publicized their intentions in advance,” and were handed notices advising them that university policy bans protests unless they are organized by student groups and approved in advance, Brown said.

University policy is to arrest anyone who refuses to leave campus after being notified of the policy, and Keyes and other protesters who stayed were arrested about 12:15 p.m. Eastern Time, he said.

Keyes, channeling Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote what he apparently views as his own “Letter From a Birmingham Jail.” (Hat tip, Alex Koppelman.) Here is a sampling:

With the arrest of Randall Terry, Father Jenkins and the University administration at Notre Dame take their advocacy of evil to a new level of spiritual atrocity.

In a little less than two weeks they will welcome to the university campus a man who represents the most abominable and extreme commitment ever known in US politics to destroying the God given right to life of innocent human offspring. With their actions and the “honor” they confer upon Obama, they will actively promote the lie that it is possible to dishonor God blatantly and unashamedly, yet be somehow “honorable” in the eyes of those who profess faith in Jesus Christ.

Christ said:

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Matthew 25:31-40)

These words must ring in the ears of faithful Christians as they consider the grim reality of abortion. Every time abortionists rip a child limb from limb within the womb; every time they crush the fragile head; every time they scorch the life from its body with a death dealing solution; every time they scrape its nascent cells of life from the walls of a womb- Jesus is savagely beaten again; his skull pressed down with thorns; his limbs pulled savagely in their sockets; his hands and feet pierced through with nails; his breath drawn with fiery pain; his life finally extinguished; every time.

I wonder if Alan Keyes also believes that Jesus is brutally tortured to death again every time a human being created in God’s image is tortured. I wonder if he knows that is one reason that many self-identified Christians oppose torture.

As far as I can tell, no one else writing about this has pointed out the sad irony of Alan Keyes — a man who rejected his own daughter when she came out as gay in 2005 — writing panegyrics to “innocent human offspring.”

Here is part of a New York Times op-ed from the time, written by Dan Savage:

Alan Keyes is the Republican who moved to Illinois last year to run against Barack Obama for the United States Senate. To describe Mr. Keyes as an opponent of gay rights is putting it mildly: during his campaign Mr. Keyes described homosexuality as “selfish hedonism.” When asked if he thought Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, was a selfish hedonist, he replied, “Of course she is.”

Learning that a prominent conservative like Mr. Keyes (or Randall Terry, the anti-abortion-turned-antigay-rights crusader whose son revealed last spring he is gay) has a gay relative is nothing new. Newt Gingrich, for instance, has a lesbian half-sister. But for gays and lesbians there’s something particularly satisfying about watching a prominent antigay conservative learn that his or her own child is homosexual. It smacks of cosmic retribution: Mr. Keyes now has to choose between his antigay “pro-family” rhetoric and a member of his own family.

Sadly for Maya Keyes, her father apparently has more affection for his ideology than for his daughter. She says her parents kicked her out of the house and have refused to pay for her education. (Thankfully, some of those evil gay people have come forward to pay her tuition at Brown next year through the Point Foundation.) Perhaps Mr. and Mrs. Cheney could find the time to call Mr. and Mrs. Keyes and explain how parents who actually value their families react when they learn one of their children is gay.

But I can’t enjoy this news about Maya Keyes as much as most gays and lesbians. As a parent, you see, I feel Alan Keyes’s pain – and Randall Terry’s too. I can empathize with their desire not to see their children grow up to be one of us because I live in mortal fear of my child growing up to be one of them.

FYI, Alan Keyes and the others are being held WITHOUT BAIL! Freedom of Speech? I think not! The article doe not make this point clear. They will be held unconstitutionally without bail over the weekend because they walked on the Notre Dame campus with pictures of Mary and Jesus. Well, they will be out of Obama's hair for his big speach. Hmm, freedom, really?! Yeah that 90 year old priest was pretty scary...Not. Oh, how about that 5 foot tall & 91 pound 66 year old grandmother? yeah, she was too scary for Obama. Lock that motley crew up! Are you kidding me??? I'm outraged and everyone should be too. Those people should be sent home not be put in prison.

Somehow, I don't think you mean that as a compliment, Polimom.
  • This is an amazing comment thread.

    Wow. Just... wow.

IWonder if anyone figures out the out come of this situation. As long is people fight for the rights of others, they tend to forget their rights are also been take away. I have friends lesbians, and some gay guys, I have no problem about their way of living even if I don't apply them as part of what I believe is the best way, but I understand the nature of genes, and so I believe it's not because desire in many cases, but nature it self.
The thing is, this Colleague is been promoting and advocate the Catholic believe, not only that, because that, many young people thru time, got to go to this colleague and pay huge amount of money for that "privilege" because they believe in the same stand as the Catholic Church. Abortion is a killing machine, but bigger issue is something that no one seems to understand. When Barrack Obama open the door is wide he did, he basically did open the door of evil, because if someone want to exterminate people from the face of earth, what better way that to promote in the consciences of others that kill children's is ok? How about those kids that born even after the intent of in abortion and they still had been kill? Do we argue about when life starts? Because if that is truth, how can people kill those babies with out impunity with the excuse that they have the right to do so, the so call President (not to me) allow for this to happen.
I will image that when he have his two daughters abortion was not in the plate, but at the same time, make me wonder if Michelle was pregnant in different times and have abortions, it's the excuse that I will see ok, if at the same time to make quiet my conscience I allow everyone to do the same.
This life style will allow in a few years to come, to exterminate the human race, it's no way that humans can be independent mentally, if they been created other them between a man and a woman. That's the bigger picture that ignorant or ego centrist people do not want to see, they are to worry about their little pity lives.
No understand neither since when in animal life, have more value of a human life? Only the immoral have excuses to make this possible and to make it the law or even comfortable for other people way of doing things.
I wonder if will be ok, for all of this people to think that if Barrack mother have in abortion when she was expecting him, if we will have this discussion now, some people using their words of immorality, should " never " born.

For the person who writes this news, her bias stand is incredible. One should wonder where America is going by having a person in a White House that get sh... To the rest of the Country and his only consideration are to his ego, his rage of control everything and his hunger of power. I wonder how long will take the American people to really wake up and smell the coffee. You think that you're safe because no one attack in seven years, your enemy is within, I hope for the sake of all of you, that you will see it before is to late. Those are issues of importance, not who's gay or not, as well importance is the 1st amendment in both way's not just the one that suit those in power today.
By the way, I'm not American, I'm one of those people from Europe that you admire so much, because our way of life, and I will tell you, that's very stupid, because it's in Europe where terrorist attacks, poverty, many with out jobs, crisis, and rebellions and many other things, happen in constant bases. You have a good Country with good laws, safe both; it's your life in place. and you don't even know!

That make me cry, I grow up thinking that Americans was smart and intelligent people, as well they have honor, values, morals, ethics, respect... in happen to find out that is lost somewhere is a heart breaking by deceive.
    God Bless to all.

Well first we live in a Republic not a Democracy. Look up the difference. So what basically you are saying is that if something is legal that makes it right both ethically and morally (to include Religously). Yes abortion is legal, I don't argue that point. I stand by principle. And Constitutionally speaking many things the Bush administration were wrong also, so you don't have me there either. I am totally against the Patriot act, and according to the Constitution only Congress has the authority to send troops to war. Not a UN Resolution or any war powers act since it was just rubber stamped by Congress and wasn't an amendment, but just remember Bill Clinton used it too. I sure hope the ones promoting, having abortions have a good excuse come judgement day since these unborn babies didn't ask to be conceived. Man's law vs His law, I just wonder where he will side. Not trying to second guess God but it's something to think about. And in your own writing "that would have happened, for me, every time former Pres. Bush, or anyone associated with the Bush administration, went anywhere to speak or received any award or recognition". Apparently you didn't attend for whatever reason. Maybe convictions? Maybe the Graduating students since I know they want to attend the ceremony should just quietly turn their backs when he takes the stage. Basically the pro part of this discussion is not really against what I am saying but is what the Pope is saying if you will check out the articles. I also never said the entire community should be barred. Bottom line is that since the POTUS views are so contradictory to the Catholic Faith, is that he should have never been invited. That would be like inviting Sarah Brady to an NRA convention and giving her an honorary membership.

would you like like someone (no matter who) to come to something (no matter what) that you were against, and then hand that same person some type of award?

Willnc, that would have happened, for me, every time former Pres. Bush, or anyone associated with the Bush administration, went anywhere to speak or received any award or recognition. Barack Obama is president of the United States; abortion is legal in this country; and we live in a pluralistic, secular democracy, not a theocracy. This is not Iran or Saudi Arabia. Disagreement with someone's point of view or political position on a particular subject is not a reason to bar an entire community from hearing what they have to say -- especially (to say the least) when the person is the POTUS.
  • Willnc
would you like like someone (no matter who) to come to something (no matter what) that you were against, and then hand that same person some type of award? Think about it hard. Because what it means, that no matter how much you push for or against something that you believe in, you are allowing that person to speak, then giving that same person an award. Then when they leave they are going back to fight against you. Apparently there are quiet a few that feel this way. http://www.usnews.com/blogs/god-and-country/200...

What I am saying is that not only many Catholics but Protestants have turned their back not only to their Religions but to God and become complacent.
  • kathykattenburg
Well let's see. Keys was protesting Obama being invited to a Catholic College which religiously is supposed to be against abortion.

Ah, I see. And the Catholic College cannot be against abortion if Obama is invited there?
  • warriorforlife2
Agree with willnc...this has all been a long and mysterious conflict of beliefs!! In TRUTH there is always consistency!!! Does anyone, see this here?? The only message given is a "bizarre"...oxyMORON!!!
Please, even if, you have no "Religious Beliefs"...then, just common sense, may be of help, in this horrific, escalation of the BUTCHERY OF THE UNBORN!...and, persecution of those, who defend them...and, protection of promoters, which includes..politicians, organized religions etc.!
Please research all HUMANIST MANIFESTOES...1933, 1973, 2000 AND 2006!! These will be helpful, to explain where we ALL are @ this time..goal is total amorality, hatred, abortion, cloning, war & more war..and, BANNING OF GOD AND THE NWO!! SO, HERE WE ARE FOLKS..TIME USE COMMON SENSE...BUT, IT IS FAR BETTER TO GO TO GOD!!! Thank You and God Bless!!

Well let's see. Keys was protesting Obama being invited to a Catholic College which religiously is supposed to be against abortion. Obama is highly supportive of abortion which prompted the protest. Now keep in mind that many liberals are for abortion but many against capital punishment for murderers, Yeah I can see some hypocrisy but from the other side. Still trying to figure out the superstitious part though. Thought that was like breaking a mirror, walking under a ladder, and a black cat.
  • JSpencer
As far as I'm concerned people like Keyes are throwbacks to an earlier century who should mind their own business and quit trying to foist off their superstitious and hypocritical "values" on rational people.
