Ten Factors Working Against GOP Revival

Ben Smith spotlights the list put together by Mark Halperin. From what I’ve read, I think Mr. #10 is a more significant factor in this equation than his position on Halperin’s list suggests.

    I don't know Pete
I think numbers two and three may be enough to keep the Republicans in the wilderness for a couple of election cycles.

Well, ALL people are affected by radio and/or television advertising. When I was working in the restaurant, I could tell TO THE MINUTE when one of our products went on TV. People are like sheep. They really and truly are.

  3. Pete Abel says:

Ron — I would agree, to the extent that I think points 2 and 3 are ranked appropriately; in fact, they might be moved up one notch each. My point about Rahm is only this: He's a remarkably smart, formidable, disciplined manager who has the potential to marshal the machine “to keep the Republicans in the wilderness” even if they miraculously manage to address points 2 and 3. And for that reason, while he probably doesn't deserve spot #1 on the list, I definitely think he deserves better than 10th place.

  4. DrToast says:

Can anyone expand on why Rahm is such a problem for them? He really works in the background, so it's kind of hard to judge his influence.

Ben Smith worked really hard to avoid the demographics issue. It is not the nativisit tendencies of the Republican Party. It is the over the top liberalism of non-whites in the U.S. The only way that the Republicans could ever appeal to non-whites is to stop being conservative (or even pretending to be conservative). Ben Smith does not want to admit that the U.S. is on its way to being a one party state. Political reporting from DC in the future will eventually be like political reporting in Chicago today. Instead of talking about elections, the talk will be about corruption.

  6. GreenDreams says:

Predictable comment, SD. The GOP is hostile to blacks, Hispanics, Asians, women, gays, non-Christians, the poor, urban dwellers, academics, scientists, workers, movie stars, musicians and SO many other groups. And young people are not by and large, hostile of these groups. Of course the party is dying. “The base” of angry old white men just isn't enough.

  7. superdestroyer says:

    Greendreams,

I guess being conservative (or at least pretending to be conservative) makes one hostile to blacks and Hispanics.

How can a conservative party support quotas, set aises, 8a contracting, affirmative action. How could a conservative party support the idea supported by liberals in the Ricci that race is more important than merit. Yet, if one believes that people who make the highest scores on a promotion test should be promoted are not called racist in the U.S. and those who believe that promotions should be based upon race are called progressives.

Number 5 is a very significant blow for the republicans, I don't know why they don't tolerate immigrants that much, interestingly enough I learn the other day the Tedd kennedy is fervent supporter of immigration reform and his death will serve in some way as plus to the immigration reform campaign.

The conservative movement has been dying out for many decades now. In the U.S. we have social security, medicare, laws to limit how long an employer can force workers to work, laws to protect minor workers, laws that require businesses to provide a safe place to work, anti-pollution laws, laws against ruining nature through excessive logging/strip mining/etc.

These are all government controls of capitalism that the conservatives fought to prevent. The world is becoming a kinder place despite what the robber barons want.
